South Hill, VA to East Berlin, PA

Next week I'm going to be traveling from South Hill, VA to East Berlin, PA and would like to find a good alternative to I95 and Washington DC. I'm thinking about taking Rt17N at Fredricksburg up to Warrenton then Rt 15N to Hiedlersburg, PA. What do you think, good choice? Does anyone have a better choice?

Thanks,
Bruce

What time/day are you traveling? 17 is good but 15 can be as bad as 95 at times. It's all in the timing.

I have gone that way to avoid DC but depending on the time of day, going through Gainsville and Leesburg can be slow.
Note, where 15 leaves 29 in Gainsville, it is a left turn onto 15 north, you will need to be in the left lane. Once you leave Gainsville, it is mostly a two lane road up to Leesburg. Pretty drive though through the rolling hills of Virginia.

We will be traveling through next Thursday mid day, around 12:00 - 1:00. I'm familiar with Rt17 but have never used Rt 15 so I'm not sure what to expect. I'm thinking that midday I-95 shouldn't be too bad so I might just bite the bullet and go for it. I will have my wife check the traffic reports on her phone as we go though.

Thanks,
Bruce

If you're going up 95 thru Baltimore, there are restrictions about propane tanks thru the tunnels. I know 20lb tanks are prohibited. We go from near Philly to Leesburg and take the pa turnpike to 15 then south to Leesburg. IMO much better than 95.

A friend of mine does that 17/15 route a couple of times a month as he heads to Harrisburg. He claims it is way better than dealing with DC...I'll find out myself in a couple of weeks....so good luck to ya!
