State DOT scales

I am new to towing a 5th wheel. Are we required to stop for the state DOT scales? I have a Ram 2500 9600 lbs and a Wildcat 333Mk 5th wheel, 10500 lbs.

Recreational Vehicles are not required to stop at DOT scales.

However, if you should happen to pass one that is closed, but it looks like the scale display is still working, it is a great way to get actual weights on your axles for free.

I have not had the courage to pull into an open weigh station to get weights. I have used CAT scales before, but it's $12 for the first weight.

Longest story simplest and shortest, no you don't need to stop.

The longer answer is more technical and complex, but let's not get into that.

That said, knowing the weights of your RV is super important and you want to make sure that you don't exceed it's weight ratings for both the truck and trailer. Truck stop scales are a great way to check on your setup. Here's instructions for how to do it and how to evaluate the numbers once you have weigh slips.

We have noticed this numerous times traveling in Canada and have used it frequently. Seems like a smart idea on the part of the authorities - no cost to them and might just keep the highways a little safer when drivers know their weights. Don't recall noticing this at US weigh stations though.

Most of the active scales in WA state will leave the scales turned on and the readout either on a pole, visible as you pass over the scale, or turned toward a window you can get out of your vehicle and view.

I have one three miles from my house that I use on a fairly regular basis. Close enough I can go weigh my truck just before hooking up my TT and then stop by for a full combination weight as I leave town.

The scales are used regularly, when closed, by the local gravel and log trucks so they can avoid weight tickets if possible.

.
I've heard this before in the past. But the two new weigh stations near me in NJ (on rt78) when they are closed have gates pulled across the entrance, no trespassing sigs plastered everywhere, and cameras. Maybe someone stole a scale or something one night.

Or we are just friendlier here in Oregon and Washington.

The phone number of your DOT scale may be public information. I have called the FL DOT scale on I-95, MM 92, and was able to weigh my truck / boat rig (it was at night). You should give them a heads up just before arriving so that they know what you want to accomplish when you first pull on the scale. Otherwise, pull thru and park in the truck lot and go into the office. Introduce yourself and ask for a weigh and explain what you will be doing for the three weighs.
