Swim Advisory

I keep hearing about a No Swim Advisory in place in Myrtle Beach that has been in place since Oct. 2015.... We have reservations at Ocean Lakes in June and not being able to play in the ocean would not be fun. Ocean Lakes says one thing about this and news outlets in the area are saying that city government is dragging their feet on making a public statement.

The DW saw that the other day on Facebook maybe.. Guess we will take that off our destinations this summer.. Apparently the bacteria levels from pollution are way to high and too unsafe to risk...

First thing Ocean Lakes in not in Myrtle Beach it is actually in Horry County so the Beach Laws would apply only to the Horry County Beach Laws.

Second the Ocean Lakes Water park may be open by Memorial Day

Haven't heard lately if they are on schedule.

Swim Advisory

Here is a recent update. Have been to Myrtle beach each year for last 10 years. Like others taking it off my list this year until they figure this out.
http://www.myrtlebeachsc.com/health-...term-advisory/
Too many other nice beach areas to go to without this issue.

This was in a news article:

*EDITORS NOTE: A NO SWIM ADVISORY DOES NOT BAN ANYONE FROM GOING INTO THE OCEAN. THE BEACHES IN THE CITY OF MYRTLE BEACH ARE NOT CLOSED. THE DHEC ADVISORY IS SIMPLY POSTED TO ALERT BEACH GOERS OF HIGHER LEVELS OF BACTERIA IN THE OCEAN WATER.

The article did mention Surfside beach which is close to Ocean Lakes.

We are not taking it off our list at all The water park will be great and is on schedule. Do not think this is as big a deal as everyone is making it.

More info do not panic !!!!!

This is not new !!!!! If you have swam there before ...............

The Myrtle Beach city beaches have been experiencing unacceptable bacteria levels for several years. In 2009, Myrtle Beach was listed by Business Insider as one of the twelve most polluted beaches in the United States. While neighboring Surfside Beach is also considered unsafe for swimming, North Myrtle Beach receives good ratings, as do Litchfield, Pawley's Island, and Garden City beaches.

Another Article quoted

THE CITY OF NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, THE CITY OF GARDEN CITY BEACH, LITCHFIELD BEACH, and PAWLEYS ISLAND beach had systems in place that allow them to maintain ongoing the highest water quality reading DHEC gives which is good water quality. Myrtle Beach had no such systems in place.

If Horry County is near Myrtle Beach.. The ocean water would be the same... It is all the same ocean. As for the beaches open and the water closed... I do not go to the beach to get sand in the wrong places.. I want to swim. I can do a water park up here and save the trip... Guess if it's been going on since 2009 they are not so worried about it... Until the tourist stop coming.

The difference is that bacteria levels usually peak during hot times- not when it's still basically cold in March. If it's bad now, it's going to be Horryific in the summer.

I'm staying at one of the parks in April, but doubt we'll swim in the ocean. Just not worth bringing sickness into the house.

The water is not closed. But the areas of most concern will be where the run off water enters the ocean in the city. So by that logic you can't swim anywhere up or down the east coast. No the water is not the same. Some of the localities treat the run off water before it enters the ocean.

I do not want to argue with you... But if you think that just because Horry treats their water better than Myrtle beach it cannot be polluted by the "bad" water? Again, I have NO IDEA where Horry actually is but I bet the current carries the pollution ALL OVER, even to places that treat their run off much better... I would guess a few miles before it begins to become dispersed amongst the rest of the ocean. We are not talking about the ENTIRE ocean, only a 10 mile or 15 mile stretch... That they seem to have royally screwed up.

Horry is the name of the county in which Myrtle Beach is located.

High Ecoli.... Fish pooping too much in the water.....

For the last several years, the 'State' where I live have 'closed' lakes to swimming because of 'high' Ecoli...... flowing into the lake water from surround streams and it is blamed on high amounts of animal waste in the surrounding areas when it rains. ie..... No One Can Swim in the Lakes...... Because..... Animals are pooping in the Forest.....

I do tend to forget here cities are independent and are not in counties so not sure how SC is set up but the Horry County and Myrtle Beach have separate governments and separate laws the way I understand it. There is something like 100 miles of beaches.

I always thought the currents along the coast went basically north and the Horry counties beaches are mostly south of Myrtle Beach but whatever. For the most part all the beaches along the East Coast are polluted and many rivers and lakes so swimming in any natural water is a risk and always has been.

I do hope many stay away from Myrtle Beach it is getting too crowded away.

I Still say don't panic !!!!!!

but this is interesting: not sure my take on this

http://www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/

ATTENTION: MYRTLE BEACH'S WATER QUALITY IS FINE...

Contrary to what is appearing in some social media, Myrtle Beach is NOT under a "no swimming" advisory. Our water quality is fine and swimming very much is allowed! The information being promoted elsewhere is NOT accurate. We cannot explain why misinformation is being distributed, but welcome your calls and inquiries on this topic. Again, what you are seeing in social media is not correct. Thanks in advance for your healthy skepticism of such an obviously wrong and misleading message about Myrtle Beach.
