Things to do in Providence, R.I.

Wife and I will be traveling through New England for two weeks this July.
We have ideas for things to do and see except for Providence, R.I.
We have not been there and are looking for the unique and the “local” flavor type things. Also, can you suggest a good R.V. campground? We found the Carr Point Campground on Naval Station Newport, but they have only 6 sites, kind of small and unlikely to get a reservation since we have not firmed up our schedule yet.

Thanks,

Chris in Virginia

A great place to go in Providence is Federal Hill. It's a section just off of I-95 (Atwells Ave.) that has a ton of Italian (and other) restaurants. Lots of outdoor seating and just a fun little atmosphere. Kind of a mini Boston North End.

We highly recommend getting down to Newport and driving around past the mansions to the end of the peninsula and Ocean Avenue. Brenton Point State Park is very nice. We stumbled into a Kite fair there and it was fantastic.

We stayed at Mellville Ponds Campground. It was "okay".

I checked campgroundreviews.com and couldn't find any RV parks. Surprising.

You can stay at Normandy Farms in Foxboro Mass (3 miles from NE Patriots field, Gillette Stadium and Bass Pro Shops). It's not too far from Providence RI (25 minutes)and a great campground.
Home - Normandy Farms

Once in Providence, you can see 'Water Fire', a cool place to hang out.

All of Providence has some really phenominal restaurants. As stated by others, a must is Newport and driving down by the mansions. JFK and Jackie O were married in a church that is right downtown, including her mansion she lived in. There is always something to see and do in Newport. Another great idea is to take the ferry out to Block Island. Martha's Vineyard minus the touristy part. Small but nice and serene. And fir camping, definetly go to Normandy Farms in Foxboro. As another poster said, all of 20 minutes or so away. Besides that there is Patriot place at Gillette stadium. An outdoor mall with a few nice places to eat. Try Davio's. And about 5 minutes from Normandy is Wrentham outlets. You name it, they got it. And if you are really adventerous, across the R.I. line (25 minutes) is Foxwoods casino. The largest casino in the western hemisphere. Enjoy! Finally while in R.I., 3 musts you must try. Local favorites. Del's frozen lemonade, coffee milk, and N.Y. System weiners( Or as us locals say "Gaggers"). And weirdly enough, coffee milk and gaggers go great together. Try stuffed quahogs too!
