Back when I was growing up One wheel trailers were common. Two connections to the steel rear bumper and a wheel with a coil spring. People would stack their surplus wall tent, cooler, and "Camp Box" on them and head for the woods in their 54 Chevy.

That huge tent slept about 12 and leaked like crazy!

I remember being told to never touch the inside of a tent when it rained. That's where leaks started.


I also remember that they all smelled like some government issue preservative. Smelled it again when I went overseas with the Army.

Correct on all counts! Our Boy scout Troop had All WWII government surplus Tents and "That Smell" of the canvas on a Hot Day never leaves your Brain! Youroo!!

A truck bed at 4' x 6' is 3456 sq in. Add air to the bed at atmospheric pressure of 14# per sq in gives you a weight of 48384#.

surely we aren't the only ones who know to fill old milk jugs w/ water and freeze 'em.... then if you add some crush ice, it all stays cold for 2-3 days. no more buying ice every day over the weekend, AND no spending hundos on a stupid cooler.

We know how to, but our bottom freezer will not hold jugs and food. Not everyone has multiple freezers.

Yes, blocks of ice keep things cold longer, while crushed ice is better for cooling things down quickly.

that's why we do a ittle of both. 2 frozen milk jugs + 1 bag ice in a cheap walmart cooler... drinks went in warm and were cool from noon Friday through noon sunday...

Milk jugs are fine........but flimsy. I've found these things work better......but you need to have a few industrial type razor blades to cut the tops off. Plus that makes getting the ice out of the container easier, and reuse these containers.

2 liter coke bottles

best one ever is gallon (or more) canola/peanut oil jug. Even has a built in raised 'line' to cut top off evenly. Clean in dishwasher, top rack.

I also use the 1 liter (I think?) bottles that Walmart flavored water comes in. Cut off the label, cut off the top. These make GREAT smaller block ice to fit in tight places in the cooler.

OH.......and I have a rotomolded cooler not just because it keeps ice longer......I rarely need that. I have them because they last 10X longer.

I just put the jug in the cooler. when we get home, it goes back in the freezer to re-freeze...


Sometimes I freeze a dozen water bottles, knowing in a couple days they'll still be really cold to drink, if not still have ice in them, but they help keep everything else cold in the mean time.....

We opted for the Walmart version by Ozark Trails. You are supposed to precool the day before using. Our mistake was not taking it out of storage sooner and putting it in house. The cooler was warm to the touch when we put three 10 pound bags of ice over 36 warm soda cans, resulting in 1 opened bag melting in mere minutes. The other 2 bags were about 1/2 melted by the next morning. We emptied the water and loaded it into the back of our toad. After a long afternoon of thunderstorms and rain we headed out of Arizona towards San Diego. The back of the Jeep had to be in the 100s, but the ice was intact 24 hours later. In San Diego we put one 20 lb bag of ice in and while the ice was melted, the cans were still ice cold upon arriving home from the LA area and 15 hours of hot desert driving. Total time in use was about 10 hours shy of a week. In total used 50 pounds of ice along with a few big freezer ice packs
We intend to plan ahead and pull from storage sooner as well as get a few milk jugs frozen before our next trip. We also hope we don't need to leave the cooler sitting on a hot asphalt pad on future trips.

That works, fine.

But I like to dump the ice out of the container when it melts just a little bit, and have JUST ice in the ice chest.....and refill the container right then. Plus, it works better without the insulation of the container. That's picky, yes, and your way works fine. Just explaining why I do it.

If you want cold water to drink, your way is best of course.
