How is your cabin? I enjoyed following your blog for that build.

I have never understood what people see in trying to build something that can be had nicer and with far less effort and cost by just buying an RV. I DO understand the sense of accomplishment thing or wanting something unique, but really?? Those Tiny House shows on TV leave me lacking. They never discuss the technical stuff like heating and cooling or the sewer system. That's what I'D be interested in seeing.

Not that I necessarily agree with it, but the tiny houses I've seen have much thicker sturdier walls and construction then an RV which makes them quieter and warmer for fulltime living than an RV with lauan over foam core roofs etc. Of course this all comes at a cost of weight, but tiny houses aren't meant to travel as often as an RV. I've seen some that are truly shrunk down sturdy homes, but with wheels.

the Tiny House movement is PRIMARILY driven by Gen Xers and Millennials. they don't think RVs are cool and are for old people. they are also motivated by having something that looks like a traditional house, so they can feel like they're being more environmentally friendly and less materialistic, than previous generations.

kinda like Toyota Pious owners.

I've watched a lot of the tiny home shows and out all that I've seen, only one time did the owners actually own the land it was on. And that was to replace their cabin that burnt down.
The vast majority of them were on family or friends property.

Today they're called Tiny Houses. Years past we called them Park Models.

Noticing the vents on the sides at the top, I guess that's one way to fix a leaky roof. A bit of siding left over, why not remodel the exterior a little?

I’ve heard that in lower B.C., Canada, people are living in tiny homes, skoolies (converted school buses) and even vans because real estate prices are well beyond their budgets. So the tiny homes, etc. offer a very small home that they can custom build and buy without hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. And if they are built to local building code they are probably much more livable in the winter - except for the “tiny” part of course.

The problem of land is still an issue but some municipalities are starting to allow tiny home developments where you either buy or lease the land and bring your own tiny home. Others find people willing to lease space on their properties. I have no idea how they manage, water, sewer and electrical connections though.

In Florida, we call those mobile home parks.

(I would expound on the issue of home affordability but this thread is meant for more light-hearted content. Perhaps we're digressing?)

LOL

Chris, despite “The Trailer Park Boys” series being Canadian, trailer parks are few and far between up here.

Sometimes we call them empty lots, depending on the path of the most recent hurricane. (No disrespect meant for those who lost their homes.)

To get this thread back on track.... our campground neighbours who pulled in after dark last night have a 1997 Coleman 10’ popup (not sure which model). I didn’t take a picture out of respect for their privacy. Listening to them go through their setup routine as we sat by the campfire reminded us of our old 1999 Coleman Santa Fe popup. The ratcheting of the crank to put the roof up, setting up the door and pulling the awning out of the bag. Great memories for us as our boys all had their first camping experiences in that popup.

I agree. Tire covers on a unit in a Wal*Mart parking lot indicates permanency!

Loving it. Use it a lot on the weekends. It probably cuts into my using the camper, but I love it down at the lake.

With that said, I have it and the lots up for sale (sorta). The lots with the cabin and pavilion are not actually on the water. Meaning... when we want to take the boat out, I gotta drop the side by side trailer off the truck, go fetch the boat out of the storage lot, do the whole boat ramp thing, and then haul it out at night as the pubic overnight docks fill up just about every weekend and drop it back off at the storage lot. I probably only used the boat 3 times last year because the PITA of dealing with all that. I have looked with extreme envy at the lakefront people who just walk out to the boat, fire it up and cast off lines. So much so, that we went out and bought a couple lake front lots with a private dock on a cute little cove off the main "party cove".

Miss Kelly is really on board with idea of selling the cabin and starting over with a new on one the lakefront lots. I gotta admit that waking up to a waterfront view is awful attractive. And with 'lessons learned' from the first one, I would definitely go smaller, and one story. But the lake front lots are nowhere near as spacious as the current lots, and they are laid out kinda funky, to where we probably would not be able to do another pavilion like we have now.

I'm perfectly fine keeping the cabin and old lots, and just using the lakefront lots and dock as a (very expensive) place to keep the boats. It's only a 5 minute drive in the side by sides from the old lots to the lakefront ones, and because of that, I have used my boat more this summer than probably in the last 3 years put together.

So as of right now, the old lots and cabin are technically listed for sale. I set the price a little high, just to discourage people. But if someone tossed me that much cash, I would have to sell, and start all over again with another cabin.

I could go either way right now.

Tim

Yup! Been there. Done that. Pulled into a campground on Cape Cod at about 11 p.m. after a five-hour ride and then having to set up our Jayco that way.

Yesterday, a couple was backing into the site next to us, with the wife spotting. She backed up, tripping backwards over the wheel-stop, landing on her butt and trying to break her fall with one hand. She didn’t break her fall, but she DID break her wrist!
Y’all be careful out there please!

Yeah, my wife dislocated 3 fingers tripping over a fire ring while trying to hold our grandson and the dog's leash at the same time.
