Without knowing how its done anywhere else, I can assure you that wreck has a snowballs chance in hell of passing a Pennsylvania yearly vehicle inspection just based on the condition of the body of the MH.

My BIL who has a PA inspection station license would not even bother to pull it in the shop before rejecting it. LOL.

I had a brain fart in my previous post and somehow came up with it was seen in AL as I was also reading some prior posts. At what Wal-Mart was that POS seen. Based on the framework on the MH and platform on the van with the ladders I bet it's heading to a NASCAR infield?

In Texas, I don't think an inspection station can fail a vehicle as long as the tested systems work. In other words, the inspectors don't have that type of discretion. It may look like a total piece of garbage, but if the signals work, wipers meet spec, tires meet spec, stops in x amount of distance, etc., it passes. I see junk like that pretty regularly around here that obviously is capable of "passing" and "inspection".

I have a different take on this, I would hesitate to say it wouldn't pass an inspection just based on the outward appearance of the sheet metal, that is sort of like saying most of the people on the forum are unhealthy because they can't see their shoes because of their bellies being in the way. Ya it looks like poo, but I suspect the owner is doing the best they can and that he/she is a master at making things run, unlike many that own RVs

Here the regulation has teeth. Granted an inspection mechanic is not going to inspect every item required if you have a 2017 F 150 like chassis etc, but if you come for an inspection in something that looks like that POS they can pull out the book and go by it...It tends to keep the garbage off the road.

Safety Inspection Program
You could fail probably half the vehicles on the road in rural Texas if all of that was actually tested!!!! Surely an inspection in PA must cost more than the $7.50 or so you pay in Texas. It would take quite a bit of time to actually complete all that is listed in that doc.

What's funny is that he's probably clocked over 200K miles running that rig all over the country with no problems!

Missouri inspections are pretty easy, they check one brake, wiggle the ball joints, look at the tires and lights and check the exhaust for leaks. However, in the STL area, there is an emissions test too, and that is a booger-bear to pass. Used to be, they would stick a thingy up the tailpipe and actually sample. That was easy to beat. New plugs and tape up 3/4 of the radiator to run it hotter than hell, and it would blow clean like a mountain breeze.

Now they plug into the diagnostics. If the Check-engine light is on, it is an immediate fail. They failed my Rav4 for having the CEL on, but its throwing transmission codes, not engine codes. No matter. Light on = fail. (<-- period) and they way they have it set up, its damn hard to impossible to cheat the emissions test. Of course, there are other ways around it, so the whole thing seems like a waste of time. If that 'C' with the van had good tires, good brakes, working lights and no exhaust leaks, it probably would have passed a Missouri inspection.

One funny story. Had a crazy buddy. Like "very crazy" who had a big red chevy truck. His windshield was cracked and they failed it on the inspection. He gets a tire iron, smashes the window and using both feet push it out onto the hood. Sitting in the inspection station parking lot, mind you. He then goes to the inspector and says "Pass it now". And it did. Apparently, you do not need a windshield in Missouri, but if you do it cannot be cracked in the drivers line of sight.

go figure.

Tim

Usually around $26 to $30 where I live. On a newer vehicle they typically check lights, brakes on one wheel each front and rear opposite, ball joints and exhaust. On older vehicles that look ratty with rust, high miles etc they may go into it more. The only thing the state gets is the cost of the windshield sticker which is $2 or $3, the rest of the cost go's to the garage that has the inspection station license.

I moved from PA to OH where there is no inspection to SC where again no inspection. Now in NC where an inspection takes about 6 - 8 minutes. Ridiculous! If his lights and horn worked he is mostly good to go. Never remove a wheel to check brakes and if it does not show an exhaust leak it will pass. Still, mechanics have their license suspended at times.

I have taken my vehicles to inspection places in NC and if it is just a service station all they ask for is the registration form and your money. That's all the state wants. If your vehicle is old enough it will pass inspection with no signal lights
