Most (all?) states have driver's license classes. Different classes allow you to drive different size vehicles.

This is all separate from CDL... and nothing to do with that.

In IL, we have four different classes: A, B, C and D. There are also motorcycle classes as well. For IL, the four classes follow the CDL weight classes... but are not CDLs.

For example, my IL driver's license is a class D: "Any motor vehicle with a GVWR of 16,000 lbs or less."

If I need to drive a motor vehicle with a GVWR over 16,000, I have to start going up in driver's license class.

Again, this has nothing to do with CDL. If commercial, you need a CDL.

You would have to check the rules of your state. It may or may not matter.

Look on your drivers license. It should say what you can drive.

I live in IL also, much to my displeasure. I also have a class D.An FL60 or M2 falls under 16001-26000 and class C. I'm reading about it now. Just like everything else in this state is ridiculous and contradictory. Haven't learned much yet.

I can't wait to leave. Kind of stuck though.

So...

So, if your TV is 26,000 lbs or less AND the trailer is 10,000 lbs or less, class C will work.

If TV is over 26,000 lbs AND trailer is 10,000 lbs or less, a class B is required.

Unfortunately, if GCWR is over 26,000 lbs and the trailer is over 10,000 lbs a class A is required.

This is one of those reasons why 3/4-tons and their 10,000 GVWR cap are popular. If you have a 15,000 lbs 5er/gooseneck, you are under 26,000 lbs GCWR and the standard driver's license is fine. If you have an F350 SRW with a GVWR of 11,500 lbs, you now have a GCWR of 26,500 lbs and are pulling a trailer over 10,000 lbs. You now need a class A.

This state sucks for many reasons. The driver's license bit I can deal with though.

Interesting stuff and bait for lots of "opinions". I checked my drivers license and it states "Class C: 26,000 lbs GVWR and Trailer 10,000 lbs. ALL recreational vehicles"

Going to the Georgia DMV website pertaining to licenses they define recreational vehicle as "any self-propelled or towed vehicle that is equipped to serve as temporary living quarters for recreational, camping, or travel purposes and is used solely as a family or personal conveyance."

Many states have many rules. Some require a Class A or B NON commercial license, as Dblr said, he is not a CDL (COMMERCIAL driver's license). As Dblr said, and my belief from previous knowledge, DE is exempt. PA is not.

IN other states I am SURE they exempt them as well. You only need a CDL with an RV if hauling commercially (not recreationally). We have 3 classes of license in PA (non commercial) Class A, B, C (with two endorsements for two wheeled motorcycles andnow one for a three wheeled cycle).

In Illinois, everything's sideways. I bought a school bus and made into a hunting camper. There are rules to get an RV plate regarding what it must have. I got my RV plate before I even removed the seats. Lol...

I'm not sure what you are saying here.

In IL, there are non-CDL class A, non-CDL class B, non-CDL class C and non-CDL class D licenses. The basic license that everyone has is the non-CDL class D.

(And of course there are CDL A, B, C and D.)

RVs are exempt from CDL requirements, however you still have to get a non-CDL class A, B, C or D depending on the GVWR and trailer GVWR and/or GCWR.

The non-CDL class C is for a vehicle with a GVWR greater than 16,000 lbs and less than 26,000 lbs. If towing, the trailer must be less than 10,000 lbs. presumably you want a big tow vehicle so you can tow a big camper... so the non-CDL class C won't work because the trailer weighs over 10,000 lbs.

Cars back then weighed a quite a bit more, like 5,000#, especially if it was a convertible like Desi and Lucy's with all the hydraulics. Now everything is plastic and electric operated.

Still, the 53 Merc Monterey only came with a 125hp flathead V8 and 3 speed trans and the aforementioned drum brakes. Cant imagine that being any kind of fun.
