Tire Brands

What Tire Brands do you have for your truck? Currently I have P275/55R20. Called Firestone and they don't even sell and LT tire that size....

BF Goodrich is the only brand I have found that sells a LT tire in that size.

+3 on Michelin... Michelin is my preferred brand for any of my vehicles. If I can't get Michelin's Continentals have also been very good for me.

Michelin's here too. I just wish Michelin would address their dry rot problems. My Michelins dry rot way before the thread runs out.

Do not believe that LT275/55R20 is a recognized size in the tire industry. Also a number of the new large rim diameter tires that come OE may only be made by one company so sometimes you will have no or very little choice.

People need to be sure they are reading the complete tire size & type information.

The OP asked for LT type tire

Cooper Discovereer AR/3 is XL P-type tire not LT type

I checked with Mich rep.

Michelin LTX M/S2 is not available in that size

Michelin LTX M/S in the Discoverer design is Euro-Metric Passenger tire

I find a BFG "Long Trail" in the subject size but it is a P Type tire

Windjammin, Can you provide link?

I am assuming the OP wants LT for increased load capacity. I guess he has wrong vehicle

Thank you for your help! Currently my vehicle is equipped with Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza P275/55R20 111S M+S as it reads on the tire.

The vehicle is a 2010 F-150 Platinum 5.4L/3.73 Axle/157 Wheelbase/Full Tow Pkg. GVWR 11,200 and GCWR 17,100.

I stopped by Tire Rack today and they recommended 3 tires:
1) Nexen Roadian HP SUV which is a 275/55R20XL
2) BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2 which is the LT275/55R20/8
3) The current tire I have

I was just curious to if any of these are better/worse/or the same to what I currently have. Do I even need to upgrade tires at this time?

The closest in size in a Michelin LT Load Range E would be an LT265/60 R20....it would be about 15mm taller

OK Now we have the info and clearer understanding of your real question.

To offer a suggestion on replacement it would help to know what feature you are trying to improve as the 3 options each are offering different "solution" but what is your real "Problem"?

Ride, wet traction, Noise, Snow, Load capacity, cost, wear etc?

What about the Bridgestone's makes you un-happy with them?

Tireman9 you are awesome...I love the tires, i think they are great tires. The trailer tows and drives great...I just care most about safety...We are going to tow our trailer (9K weight) to Tennessee at the end of June...and i just don't want to blow a tire because they are not designed to handle that kind of stress...

Tread on my tires is still very good..They are not in need of replacement at this time.

OK. First you need to know I will be trying to make some of the reply generic enough so others can gain knowledge too.

You have two different areas of concern. The TT and the TV. Your tire question has been about the TV tires so lets start there.

Have you been on a scale with and without the TT attached so you know that you are not exceeding either the GCVW or the F or R GAWR of the TV? Not overloading the vehicle or tires is the first step in avoiding problems.

Now for concern with a "blown" tire. While it is impossible to be 100% you can take steps to lower the probability of causing a tire problem.

Tires fail for 2 basic reasons and I covered those in depth in THIS thread. I have to say I really wish everyone posting questions on tires read that post.

To expand. TPMS is a tool like engine oil pressure or temperature gauges in the instrument panel. The gauges can't prevent component failure but if the driver pays attention they can get some advance warning before a situation becomes more serious.
One nice feature with aftermarket TPMS is the ability to set the warning level and I always suggest the warning level be at the psi shown in Load/Inflation tables for the actual load on the heavier tire on each axle. i.e. If you have weighed the rear axle with the TT attached and know you need at least 70 psi to support the load, that would be where I set the warning level. I also suggest that for TV and MH the tire pressure be set to +10% + round up to next 5 or 0 psi point.

Multi axle TT are different and should use the sidewall max infl for the cold set pressure BUT TT also need to be sure they have at least a 15% margin on load capacity.

Back to the tire question.
Your tires will not "blow" as long as you have proper load and inflation along with a margin on the inflation or load above what the charts indicate.
None of the above can prevent a puncture or cut from road trash but keeping speed down ( I drive 60 - 63 in my MH) will give driver a bit more time to avoid trash and pay attention to the road.

Your tire selection list.
1. You say you are happy with the OE Bridgestones so that would be my #1 suggestion assuming you are not overloading them or your TV.
2. Other tires. You need to compare your load need with the tire rating. The BFG Traction tire would get worse MPG and would be nosier.
3. I would, whenever possible try and stay with tires from Tier1 or Tier-2 brand tires (link in this post) and stay away from any tire brand not shown on any Tier.

Now get to work

Your tire has a load rating of 2400 lbs at 44 psi. (2 X 2400 = 4800) Your truck has a max rear axle rating of 4000 +/- 50lbs. You would have to drastically overload your truck to get near your tire rating, in which case you would have way bigger worries than a tire problem. Air up to 44 psi. Pull it across the scales to find put your axle weights if you choose. Sometimes a little simple math can answer a question.

" 2010 F-150 Platinum 5.4L/3.73 Axle/157 Wheelbase/Full Tow Pkg. GVWR 11,200 and GCWR 17,100."

"TT is 9k"

So GCWR 17,100 - 9k leaves 8,100 for TV

Not sure how a truck can GVWR of 11,200 with a rear axle only rated for 4,000#

RVBuzz what are the numbers on your tire placard? Picture would be nice.
