Tire Pressure Monitor

Does anyone use the tire pressure monitoring system I see advertised a lot in the trade magazines, such as N/Vision? We are new TT owners and I would like to know if they perform well, as I am considering purchasing a system. If the forum considers them as overall useful, then what is the best brand to choose? The other question being of course are they just a waste of money? Thanks for your advice in advance.

There are no doubt several brands that will do you well.

I just installed (yesterday) the Truck Systems Technologies 507 system. It was $259 for a 4 sensor system. It was easy to install, about 20 minutes total. It worked well right out of the box (as it should!). It has a diagram of your programmed wheels that shows you which wheel's data is being displayed. (one at a time). Then it shows you both pressure and temperature for that wheel. You can program your high and low pressure warning points as well as a temperature warning point.

Haven't used it on a towing trip yet but can easily see how it works. I've never had a tire issue but I always worried a little whether I know I had a problem in time to prevent an even bigger problem. So this provides some peace of mind in nothing else. Anything that makes the tow more comfortable and safer is good with me.

Anyone know of a bearing temp sensor? HA! Just kidding!

But seriously, I wonder whether a bad bearing would raise the wheel temp enough to show up in the tire temperature warning? I hope I never find out!!

I have same system as acadianbob for a year now and it works great. On this system you can change the battery in the pressure sensors yourself, don't have to send to maufacturer. Well worth it.

My neighbor who has a fifth wheel has installed one of these systems on his rig. He likes the operation of it. He gave me the contact info so I can invest in one.

No way are they overkill, or a waste of money. After an incident with my DD and SIL in which their tire shredded, but was witnessed as being flat before that happened, I am a firm believer that many of the so called "trailer tire blowouts" are actually flat tire conditions before the tire shreds due to low air.

I use a Advantage Pressure Pro system.

X2. And in a tandem system, if you don't know you have a flat, you can over-stress the remaining tire and ruin that one too. I've seen tandems on the side of the road with both tires flat on one side. Usually most of us only carry one spare. So, notice of an impending problem can save that other tire and a big headache.

We also have a tst system after having two blowouts within a few miles. I had an issue with monitor not holding a charge and they replaced the unit under warranty.

Wow! Technology has certainly got cheaper. When I was at Boeing (early 1990's) a TPMS for the 767 was over $2M. Okay, the environment is harsher than on an RV, it had to be FAA certified and there were 8 wheels on the main gear, but still!

We bought a TPM system for our fifth last year, and wouldn't be without it now. Not only do you get a warning of a tire going down, but you can also see how much the pressure goes up with the heating on the road. There is even a difference from the sunny side of the camper to the shady side, while driving!

And we had an incident with our new Dodge Ram, that has the factory system. While driving to the city, we got a warning that a tire was going down. Watching the pressure, I could tell it was a slow leak, so we had time to get to a tire shop. Without the TPM, it would have gone flat and I likely would have ruined the tire.

The TPM systems are worth every penny they cost, just in peace of mind.

I have purchased a HawksHead TPMS for our trailer but haven't gotten it installed yet as trailer is still in storage. It does both pressure and temp and I can set parameters as well. I can replace the battery in each sensor myself also.

That system looks suspiciously similar to the TST system! I'm thinking they may have the same supplier. Look at both systems and see what you think. Slightly different but essentially the same.

After reading through the thread I went ahead and bought the TST 507RV with 8 sensors. I talked to Dan at TST this morning and he answered all of my questions so I will get it tomorrow and get it installed this weekend because next Thursday we will be on the road for a short weekend trip, about 260 miles round trip. I will update when we come back, hopefully all positives.

I decided a quick update was in order since the install was super easy on the TST 507RV system...now I will be warned if something is wrong with the TT tires and the TV tires...if the factory TPMS says there is a problem, the 507 will show me which one! Happened to have the perfect spot where the console meets the dash for a spot to set the monitor out of the sun and away from fingers but still easily seen. Dewinterized and ready to leave Thursday...CAN'T WAIT!

Well...10 miles into our first trip....the DW & MIL were making fun of of my need for gadgets and all of a sudden the alarm goes off after going through an intersection, the passenger side rear tire was down to 44 psi and then 38....the TST system allowed me to get into a parking lot before the tire was down to 20 psi. Saved alot of damage to the TT. BTW I could not tell by feel there was a problem. Worth the money for the 507rv system. Trailer aid was too short but a 2x8 helped, spare on and swapped sensor, back on the road. Will not be without it ever again!

Wow. As Bob stated, that is a good testimonial for a TPMS. Without knowing about the pressure going down that quickly, that tire would soon be running flat, and giving up gators. Once discovered, on would swear that the tire blew out.....when it was just run flat.
