To Bark Or Not To Bark

I am an animal lover. My best bud will soon be 13 and has survived a year with cancer. I understand loving our fur babies. Fur babies like children need discipline and training.
Our Duke is protective so when he was with us, if someone approached our campsite he would give a warning bark. DH or I would call his name and he would lay down.
Last week a camper pulled in and set up. Soon after their dog was brought out it began barking and barking and barking and....you get the idea.
The woman and her DH sat there and never once tried to quiet the dog. A truckload of friends dropped in to join them. Instead of correcting the bad behavior they talked louder to be heard over the incessant barking. These are the kind of people that will end up making good pet owners lose the right to have their furry companions camp with them.

our large breed dog started to bark while camping after our daughter was born. we dont take her on trips where we will be away from the camper anymore. even at 7 years old she gets constant training and we are correcting the barking. we cannot stand increscent barking in a campground. dogs bark, but it should not be constant. owners like the ones you described would be given about an hour, then called in. let the campground staff take care of it.

My non-human travel companion has feathers instead of fur but I love her all the same. Instead of barking, she will belt out obscenities like a crusty old sailor.

Most if not all the campgrounds I visit out west already have rules leaving pets alone. Can't do it
However, for sure i'd let the campground folks know that the dog is alone and or barking non-stop..
2 weeks ago We experienced a dog barking who was left inside the camper while the owners were sitting in their lawn chairs 5 feet away. They never moved or said a word to the dog the hour they were playing cards. and dog bark, bark, bark... Campground attendant walked over and asked them to quiet the dog down, pay attention to it or leave the park. Guy stood up walked over to the door let the dog outside which the dog promptly laid down in the grass and chilled out...

The hair stands up on the back of my neck imagining the fury I would feel in a similar situation. I really can't think of ANYTHING more infuriating than hearing a dog bark non-stop. Twice now it involved people/person that left their dog going berserk while they went away the entire day, ruining our trip. One was a FROG no less, at Williamsburg rally 2 years ago.

Hats off to Chenango Valley State Park, we endured this last year there. When I called the park office about it, a guy came out EVERY HOUR to attempt contact with people at that site, until they returned 8 hours later.

Arrogant people that let their dogs bark non stop should be given one warning by the camp host. If the dog starts again they should be given one hour notice to vacate the campsite.
There is nothing more annoying than some ones yappy mutt.

Good reason to boondock away from other campers

Reading your post made me laugh. My granddad had one of those large tropical parrots. He could talk and say several phrases. They had a nice big porch and on nice days they would sit his cage out there. Apparently a lady that lived across the street was a heavy drinker and used colorful language that the bird listened to everytime he was outside. My grandparents became aware of the influence in a very uncomfortable situation. The pastor of the church had come to dinner one evening. I don't know all the details only that at some point the bird started shouting obscenities. I can only imagine the looks on everyone's faces 🤣

She can cuss with the best of them. I have no idea where her colorful vocabulary came from.

I wish I had a picture of my granddad's parrot. He was beautiful. He was mostly green, kinda an apple green with yellow and bright orange. I remember when I would walk up to the cage he would lean forward and grab the cage with his beak and feet and pull himself close to me. He would cock his head to one side and say "Polly want a cracker"

Mine will do nearly the same thing but instead of asking for a cracker, she will usually say **** you.

The owners of the private rv park where we are camp hosting this summer will not tolerate barking dogs. Option one is to quiet and control your pet or pets and option two is the same as option one but with an additional sentence being if this can't or won't be accomplished you will happily be invited to pack up and leave.

I have personally spoke to three different groups this season and they all complied with the request of option one.

Thing that gets me is, it takes someone having to say something to these people. Total lack of self-awareness.

Great Dog - Great Park Ranger

On our last trip (to Carolina Beach State Park) my wife had to go by ambulance to the ER. (They ended up removing a badly infected gallbladder. She's fine now - coming home from rehab this week.)
When the ambulance got to the campsite, the park ranger was right behind. She looked at Biff - our 9yo pitweiler (rotweiler/pitbull mix) and said "You know, state park rules don't allow animals to be left unattended at the campsite." I replied "yeah, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be welcome at the ER." She thought about it for a minute, walked over to him where she was greeted with a very wagging tail, and said "How about if I put him in my truck? He can ride patrol with me until you get back." That worked out great.
Of course, when the ambulance first pulled up, he REALLY announced his presence. But calmed right down when I told him it was OK. Next day, the ranger assured me that, based on his disposition, she and her fellow rangers would not object to my leaving him while i visited my wife in the hospital.
Super staff - very understanding of the situation. And I'm very glad that Biff announces his presence and then calms down on command! He lets out a bark or two when fellow campers walk by with their dogs, and when anyone other than my wife and I come into the campsite itself. But other than that he's content to demonstrate how to be lazy.
