To cover or not to cover... that is the question

I have a cover for my RockWood that I used the first year we had it. I forgot about it until I found it this weekend. I'm debating if I should cover it this year for the winter.

I've heard a few arguments both ways. Cover it to keep it protected. Don't cover it, the cover will rub the roof membrane at the edges and ware it out.

Thoughts?

Dealing with the Michigan winters, I've used the ADCO RV covers (Tyvek Plus Wind) for years on several different trailers. Each new trailer has been longer, but I've been able to sell the previous covers on Craigslist right away.
Never had problems with the covers doing any damage & the trailers have looked just as clean in the spring as when they get covered in the fall. Sunny & 65 degrees here today - but didn't want to push my luck & got it covered this afternoon.

We cover our trailer for the winters as well. Keeps the trailer clean for when we remove the cover in spring. Here pro's and con's for covering or not. For me, I like to keep things clean for as long as I can so I opt to cover for the winters.

We never covered our 32' TT the three years we lived in Alaska and had no problems.

We cover our R-Pod 177 every fall when we put it away. So far, we've not experienced any problems with either the Pod or the cover over two Canadian winters.

I'm torn.

A gazillion pine and oak trees almost ruined the roof of previous trailer.

Can't decide what to do this winter with the 5'er. Just not sure.

Not sure how much you want to spend to protect the investment, so just an idea for you.

If I were to cover a camper It would be cheaper for us to invest in a carport type cover. Around here any other cover you are lucky to get a year out of it. All to often in this area a camper gets covered the first year and never again........

Short answer for us is never again...................

to cover, or not to cover

I bought a cover a few years ago, and tried really hard to like it. I HATED it and eventually stuffed it in a dumpster. Although there really isn't a winter here, it is very windy where I live and that makes it very hard to put on, take off, or fold it up. I found that it did cause some wear spots on my RV. I'm sure the wind contributed to that. It also catches and rips very easily. When I contacted ADCO about that I found out that their idea of a warranty, is to send you some tape to fix the rips. I love the idea of a cover, but probably won't ever get another.

Cover it, no faded cracked decals. All your plastic pieces outside will stay white longer, not uellow from sun. i live mine somewhat loose, shakes of snow, needles off the.trailer plus better for ventilation.

Here in SoCal we don't get much rain and certainly no snow but I cover it to protect against the sun uv and dirt. After several years it will still look much better than if it sits out exposed all the time. There might be a small rub spot to tend to but the rest of the unit will be like new.

We purchased a new cover from Camping World and opted for the three year warranty, they will replace it 'no questions asked'. Essentially, we can have a new cover every three years via there warranty/exchange policy. There is a fee for doing that, but it is much lower than a new cover. The sales guys at Camping World talked me into it, we will have to see if it 'nets out' in the long run.

The biggest hassle is climbing up to cover it, my wife is tiny compared to me and she volunteered for the job.

I can't put up a carport type thingy. I back into end of driveway but can only go so far. The posts would have to be half on the driveway and half on dirt. It'd 'stick out' into the driveway. I'd need 40 feet and that'd eat up a ton of my 12' wide driveway and make entry to the garage impossible.........

We winterized our Class C in Nov. and opened it up in April. We kept it covered each time, same ADCO cover for 5 years. I stored the cover in a large clean plastic trash bin. Pulled it out of the bin on my way up the ladder when covering it.
No rub marks and the RV finish looked good as new when we sold it after 5 years.
Now that we are retired we use the 5th wheel frequently through the winter so we do not cover it.

Love my Wildcat 295RSX!

That's a high cost for a rv carport Mine was just about $ 1000 less for a 20 x 36 12 ft high installed 12 ga. and up to 120 mph wind . I fit the roo in it and my pickup and one car with just the front of my work car plus I still cove the roo to keep it clean and birds from leaving me a gift on the top. mine came with 3 Mexicans and it was up in less then 5 hours
