Tornado got it!

Our favorite campground has been almost totally destroyed. This week a tornado took out b section, c section and the tent section of Wheeler State park in Alabama. We have spent many weekends and weeks at this campground, The only section left is a section. If you search for the park there probably be several pictures, as this campground spaces were separated by trees and did not have campers close together. The good note is that, the campground will be upgraded with 50 amp service and new water lines. This campground was scheduled for an upgrade soon, guess it just will be sooner then later.

I was really sad to see this. Although it has been a few years since we have been there, we have spent many nights there. We camped there back when we were still using a tent and then had our shakedown trip in our first pop-up there. The really nice thing about that campground is the privacy. It will take many years for the trees to grow back.

I agree with your "favorite campground" reference. Joe Wheeler State Park is one of favorite campgrounds as well. We especially like the upper sites in B Section. We actually had plans to be there in February and March this spring. We look forward to having it open again.

The news reports say 'no injuries' because the Park Rangers got the campers to safety in the Lodge's basement.

That's the good news, bad news it's closed til further notice.

Glad no one was hurt. Weather is always one of our biggest fears in these things. Even with all the weather alerts and apps available now, bad storms and killer wind gusts can still strike virtually out of nowhere sometimes.

The same thing happened several years ago to the Village Green Campground in Brimfield, Massachusetts. We had just checked out on Memorial Day after a wonderful weekend camping with friends when two days later, a tornado decimated the campground, killing one. We made a point of camping there at least once a year in subsequent years to help support their recovery. To this day, there are still signs of where the tornado sheared off the tops of trees, but nature is gradually repairing itself and the owners have done a wonderful job in restoring their business.
