I have been out west . The ratio of mountain top to valley floor is almost identical to the southern Appalachians. The Rockies have a 6,000 foot advantage sitting on a big plateau. Even at 15%grade that is 792 feet vertical climb per mile and using your 30 mile grade suggestion that would be climbing 23,000 feet and change. I don't think he has to climb 23,000 feet to get into Yellowstone entering from the east. Just saying..

We have several grades in my neck of the woods with run away truck ramps and those that will smoke a fools brakes. Last time I checked. I live in real mountains. We have a well over a dozen peaks over 6,000 feet here. ;-).

Like another guy said he has Toyota . That truck has the highest resale of any used compact truck and even some full size trucks. Why? Because it is one of the best built trucks on the road. If he takes it easy on the climbs and use his tranny to engine break he will be ok.
