I plan 250-300 miles for our long trips. Sometimes we have to go further because of the circumstances. With dogs and my speed limit of around 62, that’s a good 6 hour day.

On short trips, we can go 350 miles or more if it gets us there. Much longer and it’s a 2 day trip. After all, we’re retired!

Travel time

We're retired and don't really care about rushing to get from point A to point B. I have friends that go from NE Ohio to Florida in 1 day, we take 4 days. We've seen a lot of cool campgrounds and met many friendly folks on the way. To me that's what camping is about.

Everyone is different, we start with 250 miles in mind but first day is usually 450 miles. If going by Goshen the next day is the same. We normally run 400 miles a day. We normally get up on traveling days at 7am and leave by 9am. I have a 100gal auxiliary tank so I never stop at truckstops. I start out driving 63 but I soon get tired of everyone passing me and I usually speed up to 75. I get my best fuel mileage at 63, so it’s a trade off. We meet people on the road and maybe see them down the road later. To me it’s like walking the Appalachian Trail, some walk fast and some slow but sooner or later we arrive at our destination. I enjoy camping, I hate coming home but DW will not go full time. It’s all fun

I plan all my long distance hauls based around a maximum daily travel distance of 700 miles if we start at 6AM and get off the road for the night by 8pm. This includes stops for meals, bathroom breaks and fuel. If I'm going someplace that's 1000 miles away, I know that's a 1 1/2 day journey.

The FAQ is read only. It's not a general question forum.

I think I might hold the record for the shortest, not counting moving from spot to spot at a campground.
300 yards +/- from exit at the campground to entrance of the golf course.

Why? Harvest Host golf course. Leave campground mid morning, play a leisurely round of golf(almost always walk), don't even unhook so I am ready to go the next morning without much to do. Even then it is 0830 at the earliest most likely.

I try to keep my standard driving distance at about 100 miles max. Leisurely inside breakdown with my coffee then head outside. Just spent my first winter romping around. 2600 miles in just over 5 months, usually 3-7 days at a spot. Even at 100-125 miles I figure that is a good 6-7 hour day between break down and set up.

Helps to be retired and no set plans.

Rule of Three
1. 300 miles a day
2. Be in campground by 3pm
3. 3 by supper time

3 x 3 x 3

We are retired towing a 26’ TT.
Major highways cruise control set at 62 mph.
Byways 1-2 mph under the posted limit.
Our philosophy: 3x3x3
Every 3 hours stretch, bio break
300 miles is great day
Setting up site by 3 to enjoy where you are!!!!

It depends on where we going how long we have. The wife has relatives about 600 miles away. We usually see the over our short breaks. So a day there and day back. It never made since to drive half way setup tear down then drive for just a few more hours and setup again. We leave house about 4 am finish setting up around 3 ish we don’t push hard. On return trip leave around 8 am but since not setting up don’t care if it’s dark, when we arrive home.

If longer trips we do push hard the first day again 600 plus but then we do shorter segments for rest of the trip. Plus it saves a little money as we aren’t taking as many days between our destinations gives more time at our destination.

Wife likes to take her time when getting ready to depart, usually around noon. I like to arrive at our destination no later than 5pm. I can take my time setting up and relax a little without feeling rushed.

With my past DP I would do a max of 300 miles per day. But I preferred the 250 range. I always leave no later than 8 AM to get to my location mid-afternoon. We would eat a snack on the road and eat a late lunch at the campground after I set everything up and drink a cold beer. My shorter days were partly due to my cataract eyes which I don't have that problem now.

With the new truck and trailer setup I will be pushing my limits to see how I do with a 378 mile day on the upcoming trip. This is partly due to not finding suitable campgrounds to stop at around the 250 to 300 mile range. I will do longer pit stops to stretch my legs and back more.
