Travel during these uncertain time.
Has anyone changed or canceled their travel plans with the events last week at the Capitol. Or the threats of continued violence leading up to or after the inauguration. We had planned to depart on January 15th traveling to southwest SC,GA,AL,MS,AR,TX,LA and FL.
Thoughts?

Hmmm...the last nine months we have had cities burning. Rioters blocking roads. Looting. Car jackings up 100% in most cites. Hell, there were 3261 shooting in just Chicago last year. Almost 4 car jackings a day in that city. My home city of Minneapolis had over 125 car jackings in 2 months.
How is what happened last week at the capitol going to affect you?

Do your plans include the major cities' inner cities or the federal court houses. I think you'll find most folks are good, conscientious citizens where ever you go. We all have our beliefs, but those are usually friendly discussions over an evening beverage with folks you meet in the parks/campgrounds you're in. GO! [site team edit] Safe travels and have fun.

That's my thinking. But the DW is really concerned after last week. Trying to convince her we are as safe camping in a state park as we are at home.

Anything away from a major city is definitely safer as far as I'm concerned. Of course, its always been that way...
Good luck.

NOTE TO MEMBERS-- if this thread (or any thread) goes off the rails into political OR gun talk it will be closed pretty fast.
That's how we roll here.
We're bugging out and heading south in a few days. That stuff in Washington was scary but not got anything to do with us heading south IMO. I'm more concerned with staying safe with Covid and the price of gas is inching up. I can't wait to get somewhere warm!!

When growing up my Dad told all four kids to stay away from places you know trouble occurs. It's become obvious that the larger the city the greater the risk. Just read the news and you'll see where crime occurs. Also where heated protests tend to focus (retail business areas and government buildings).
I can't say that I've read about any serious risks when traveling to camping areas and by my very nature I try to avoid traveling through large cities on the interstates. Lousy opportunities for rest stops, quick food, or fuel.
Use common sense but don't fall victim to unreasonable fears. Go enjoy.

I just travelled through Va. Tn. AL. MS. La. into TX to the Rio Grand Valley and did not experience any thing. We only stopped overnight and for gas. I agree as long as you do not wander into a major city you should be fine. I also observed most everybody was wearing masks in businesses. Your DW should not be worried mine was not.

We don’t see any reason to let that event change our plans. Skip DC January 20th I’d advise. For lots of reasons. We’ve always avoided events/areas that are likely media magnets anyway and this year maybe more than most. Plus, tell your wife to stop watching the talking heads as they tend to crank folks up just to further their ratings. Everywhere we’ve been this season is fine-just very COVID avoidance conscious.

My plan is to avoid the areas that have been subject to unrest, which has been mostly isolated to cities, and you probably wouldn't want to pull your fiver there anyway. Stay tuned to newsources in the event blockages bleed over to the interstates.

Stay out of DC and stay away from State Capitols.
That is where the armed crazy people are headed.
Big cities in general are the other areas to avoid, but they are mostly unarmed demonstrators.

But again, I can't think of a reason to haul a camper through a city proper, much less downtown. Yes, there are plenty of cities small enough not to have beltways, and I've passed through some capital cities where I've pointed out the State House to the kids, but I'd feel perfectly happy pulling the camper on those roads even this month.
People with anxiety (or drama) issues need to admit it to themselves and stay home. But that's got nothing to do with politics or pandemics, just an observation.

The states you have listed is what I call a Red State Road Trip. Sane and safe to carry in.

I stayed home last year because of Covid. I'm not doing it again this year. Just staying away from the major cities.

I'd avoid state capitals. Not because of the fear of violence, but more to avoid street closures due to security precautions. Of course, you're probably not going to travel through city streets anyway.
If your wife is still nervous, tell her that you'll keep the radio turned to the news. You should be fine.

After last summer I figured I would need to check the riot report as well as the weather report when traveling cross country.

The events of last week would not stop me from traveling. If there’s something we want to see in a “big city”, we camp near enough to make a day trip into the city & play tourist. As a general rule, the violence occurs after dark, since COVID shut down most restaurants, sporting events, and theaters in big cities,
there’s no real reason to be there after dark.
We’ve cancelled many trips last year and one this year because the places we were going had COVID breakouts & at our age & with our health issues (asthma and a new heart valve) it seemed prudent to stay home. When you go, remember to take your masks, wash your hands, use hand sanitizer when hand washing isn’t possible, and avoid big crowds. (Sorry, the Mom in me just had to say that).

I’m not putting my life on hold for this stuff. Avoid the areas where unrest is likely, where the virus is peaking and be smart, not scared.
Having said that it’s just me and the wife. We’re both in our 60s so want to enjoy the outdoors while we’re still able to. Not traveling with kids either so not putting them at risk. I might think differently if that were the case.
