Smile Traveling in US

We are thinking of driving to Florida in the fall, and staying a few months. Just wondering what "secondary" roads would be like to pull a t.trailer.
Just thinking we won't want to be on interstates all the time, especially around some of the bigger cities. In Ft Lauderdale at the moment, and being on the interstates with a car is enough for us. We will be driving from Manitoba, Canada
Appreciate any suggestions.
