Traveling to Canada with Parrots

Anyone taken a parrot or two into Canada. We plan to travel to Canada in July and our African Gray and our Amazon travel with us. Is there any thing special we need to do or need to have before entering the into Canada?

I’d recommend finding a parrot babysitter and not risk losing them.

Parrot Eh

Don't do it, it's not worth the potential hassle returning to the US. Canada is most likely OK with your birds. The US may force a 90 day quarantine.

Very true. With exotic birds you will get a hassle from both sides of the border.

Get a certificate from your veterinarian if you have them checked from time to time. A note on there to show how long they have been seeing your birds.

Pet bird

We have a Parrotlet and were almost denied entry into Canada/Niagara Falls. The Canadian border patrol asked for papers regarding our bird's health. We explained we did not know anything about having "papers", that we have had her since she was born and for the last 9 years she has never had any health issues. We were then asked to park in an area where another officer asked us the same questions and what type of bird she was. We showed him our bird because he didn't know what a parrotlet was.

The officer left to his office and when he returned he told us that we were clear to enter. He said our bird was not on the list. We asked; what list? He would only say that she is clear to enter because she was not on their list. We asked if we were going to have any issues returning into the States. He said no.

While in Canada we googled and found out that we could have issues returning. That the United States could take our bird away, keeping her for days/weeks or longer until they could get a vet to verify she has no health issues. In fact, the border even has the right to "put her down".

Being stressed during our entire time on vacation in Canada was something I don't want to go through again.

Returning at the United States border, the border patrol asked us three questions. 1. To see passports, 2. where in Canada did we travel and 3. what state and city do you live in? She told us to have a safe trip and we hit the gas pedal.

For us, we will never travel to Canada or Mexico with our pet bird.

Circa 1955 we had an American borne Sooty Mangabey Monkey traveling with the family. We crossed into Canada without issue, returning was another story. We did manage her return with us. That was only after she wrecked the customs office, relieving herself wherever and throwing important paper through out the office. Same thing, not on the list. After capturing the monkey we were politely instructed to get out while the getting was good. My father was heart broken. He was silently praying for confiscation throughout the entire adventure.

I am a veterinarian who writes those certificates for international travel....very few vets left that have certification for all species so find one near you (my personal opinion involves all animal owners having great veterinarians already on their speed dial :-) )

This is the link to get you the info you will need https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/our...ort-and-export with this second link giving you info on birds in particular https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet...-birds-into-us.

You may need CITES permits depending on the species so make sure you check this from EVERY angle & hope we don't have an avian flu outbreak originating in Canada or the USA while you travel. Getting your bird microchipped will be critical; depending on the size of the bird I require the use of quick anesthesia (requires bird to be healthy) & pain meds after because we implant something the size of a large grain of rice into very little breast muscle for those birds just over 100 grams.

When we retire I will be traveling with my parrot likely across the same border but luckily she was banded as a baby & it fits well so has been able to remain on her... cannot put a band on an adult bird without breaking a toe so microchip it be... feel free to PM me if you need any more info spkrvr & happy safe travels....

We had no problem twice

An interesting topic; We have crossed into Canada twice, once at New Brunswick form Maine again from Washington into British Columbia and back with a Parrot and a Dog without issue, even had to wait in Canada's waiting room pets with us while inspectors searched the RV both times. While having obtained all necessary paper work, they never asked to see it on either side of the border. That was 5 yrs ago. Use your best judgement and be prepared for anything. I believe the RV search was due to having a CHL, they didn't give a reason. Enjoy!

just a quick note cruisinhwy66.... things are tightening up on all our borders as One Health initiative & all those dang viruses are upon us ... links provided can help anyone get most animals anywhere thru vet & back into USA is where the issue is for birds lately.
