Oh I'm not driving 1500 miles straight. I take my time getting places. 300 miles in a day is about the max I want to do. Any more than that is too much like work. And I'll be taking a break every hour, maybe two at the most to walk them around, let them have water, etc etc.

LOL they'll be getting more exercise than they do on a normal day at home.

First thing we do when shopping for a truck or RV is consider what will the dog do. Stupid isn't it, but that's where we are. We had a bloodhound that owned the couch in the M/H. Current dog is happy on the floor of thr truck or the TT when parked.
Time for a bigger truck.

My dog rides in the bed of the truck, but I have a topper and pull a TT instead of a fiver. I also have windows in the rear of the cab and front of topper. I keep a very good eye on her. Even that is not idea, but she does really well. She gets out of the truck anytime we stop and always have fresh water. If she needs to stop, she has no problem with sticking her head through the window and barking. She is a large dog and yes her daddy will stop just for her. She is very, very spoiled rotten.

Would I crate her and leave her in the back of a bed, hell no. Nor would I let her ride in the TT. There are a love of options for you, hire an in home baby sitter who will come a couple times a day (also provides a level of home security) or board them. I am not real keen on that either. Leaving them home with a sitter is a lot less stressful and I have been doing that for 20+ years. Just check their references. Ask you vet for referrals.

2nd Car Works for Us

We travel and compete all over the country. My wife competes in AKC Rally with her Golden. I compete and train for Mondioring with a 94lbs Belgian Malinois. It can be a challenge. When we can't make it work with both dogs in tow, we opt for taking my wife's mini-van as a pilot vehicle. Yes you are out a little more for gas, but we can still stay in close contact and even converse via walkie-talkie. I'd rather all of us go in the same vehicle, but carrying crates big enough for both dogs is not always feasible. We could let dogs ride loose in the rear sit but decades of experience in the dog world have taught us that that can be a recipe for disaster, if you have an accident. We have a two vehicle trip coming up this weekend and again in two weeks.

We have an Excursion for a reason, our 4 legged buddies have a nice air conditioned and heated place to ride while traveling to campgrounds.

Please don't crate them and put them in the truck bed for a trip like that. 1500 miles in the bed of a pickup is 1500 miles no matter how many stops. They deserve better than that, don't you think?

When we had a fifth wheel we bought a four door F250 so the boxers could be safely belted in the back seat. Now that we have a motor home Olaf rides on the couch again wearing a dog seat belt. That's just us.

Only reason that I own a crew cab pickup is so the cat, two dogs, and their cages fit into the back seat. They are part of the family.

I addition to 2 large dogs, we travel with an African grey parrot. All 5 of us are in the truck cab. I'm sure the dogs sometimes find it "cozy," but we all fit in the crew cab.

Our dogs have way more room back in the camper than they ever would be crammed into the truck. They can both sprawl out on their travel beds with their favorite toys all while keeping nice and cool thanks to the ice cooler I mentioned earlier.

Dont feel bad! We do the same! The only reason I didnt get a Ram MegaCab last year was the back seats don't fold up like they do in the Silverado.
When you travel with our 3 you need lots of room! Lol!

I'm ok with that, But. Have you ever ridden in your TT while on the road? There was a thread some months ago about dogs riding back there - one poster said his dog looked shell shocked after a trip. He had someone take HIM for a ride. Said he was amazed at the noise in there. What I CAN tell you is that last year we moved from one spot in a CG to another, rather than put the dogs in the truck, my wife rode in the TT with them from one spot to another and said NEVER EVER AGAIN. She said the noises in there were unreal. If your dogs are ok with it then it will be fine. Just thought I would share that with everyone.

I've pulled over at a rest stop to let them out for a bit to find them both asleep. It can't be that traumatic for them.

We're on our second 4 door Ram P/up that was purchased so our two dogs could travel with us. In order to make it comfortable for them, I removed the read seat and cut a plywood board to fit that area and carpeted it. The rear seat was still brand new, when I reinstalled it before trading it in last fall for our 2017 Ram. The flat area is also handy for tools, groceries, etc when the kids aren't with us.
