Even though the sign says "No parking for trucks and RVs at any time" it does not necessarily mean what YOU think it means. To a lot of people, the word "RV" means "motorhome", and everything else is either a "camper" (truck-mounted shell) or "trailer" (5th wheel and bumper tow). The word "truck" generally refers to commercial trucks, and does NOT include pick-up trucks (which are generally thought of as passenger vehicles). Further, had the sign stated "no overnight parking", that would have implicitly allowed trucks and RVs to park there from sunup to sundown, which would be more disruptive to business than overnight parking.

The "collective wisdom" of the responses seems to be the suggestion that you CALL AHEAD to the Wal-Mart in question, so that the local management can tell you if they will allow YOUR type of RV to park temporarily while you shop for groceries, or park overnight after shopping for your groceries. They may, or they may not. Either way, you'll know how THEY interpret the sign that THEY posted...

Sometimes the signs (and the overhead beams at 10 or 12 feet) are there to keep the discourteous folks out - the ones who park their rig right up by the main entrance and stay overnight. That was the case for the Wal-Mart at Sullivan, MO that several posters have commented on. The local manager was perfectly happy to have us park overnight, even told us how to get into the parking lot through the entrance specifically set up for such purpose. They also suggested to us where the most level sites were to be found.

I've stopped overnight at Wal-Mart seven times. In every case, we called ahead to ask their management if overnight camping in our 5th wheel was OK, and if so, where they would prefer us to park. Only once were we told that we could not stay, and that was because the city council had passed an ordinance prohibiting it, and "encouraged" the police department to enforce it heavily. This was apparently done after several high-profile "breaking and entering" type robberies of the unsuspecting RVers parked at (you guessed it) that particular Super Wal-Mart parking lot. But even that manager asked which direction we were headed, and told us a couple of other Wal-Marts along our route (within 15-20 minutes drive time) that WOULD accept overnight parking.
And then you have incidents like this that may lead to "No RV Overnight Parking" signs and ordinances:

https://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=383341

Depending on where in the Country you are, Walmart parking lots are not necessarily safe places at night.

A quick "Google Search" for "Shooting deaths in Walmart parking lots" yielded 1.5 million responses. And many of the incidents were even in mid-day.

I also use it in Walmart to keep the fridge and CPAP going through the night
I hope you don't do that if people are next to you, I personally think it's rude if people are next to me, who wants to hear a open frame generator all night, better then that why you in Wal-Mart anyway? I can see if your so tired it's unsafe to drive, but I don't know I can't see it a chosen distenation not saying you did that, But...

Jeff said it's an "inverter generator" so it's very much not a "open frame generator".

And the Walmart discussion, well...

A Champion 3100 watt INVERTER is not an open frame generator. They are among the quietest generators in that wattage range.

When it comes to generator noise I find it to be often less annoying than a group of people who are sitting around and over indulging in adult beverages. For some reason alcohol seems to impair their hearing and everyone starts to shout instead of carrying on the quiet conversation they were having while sober.

As for stopping in a Wal-Mart parking lot, what's wrong with that. Lots of people will stop there along with truck stops, casinos, and even rest areas. If you're tired and want to stop, make a meal, get some sleep, have breakfast, and hit the road again those places make a lot more sense than having to pay $35 to $75 for an RV Park site.

This coming or the following week I will be hitching up my 5'ver and pulling it one mile up the road to do a night or two in the Walmart parking lot.

Have never stayed in a Walmart parking lot before (always found a place with hookups), plus just want to pull the 5'ver out since it hasn't been used since last summer.

Plus...one more thing off of our bucket list...Walmarting!

Wait a minute here about wal-mart, as I said if your tired use one better then falling asleep an killing someone, but to make it a distenation is just pure WRONG. If you can't afford a CG and your planning is so bad that you can't make it a to b. Then get rid of the camper. This is why there signs going up all over, because some people take advantage. They make it a distenation, give me a FRIGGEN break. If you have pay pal and don't have money to get a CG , PM me I'll put in your account..

True but I do see a few trailers without tow vehicles attached.

As for stopping at a Walmart because one can't afford a regular campground site, I'm not so sure that's the issue. I certainly can afford to stay at any campground I choose (other than private membership) but for just a quick overnight when I don't need power, water, or sewer, what's wrong with staying there, especially if it's a "provisioning stop". I've stayed overnight at many walmarts over the years and every time gone in and spent at least what the cost of a campground would have been. I have to park somewhere to go in and restock my refrigerator and pantry so why not do so where I can park for the night.

FWIW, I tend to be as considerate as possible, parking as far as possible from the store, in an area where I'm not taking up 6 parking stalls, or blocking a traffic lane.

My Champion 3100 generator is an Inverter type, not a open frame, so it is very quiet..
Many of my trips are longer trips where, it takes several hours just to get over the border into the US and then to get where we need to go. IE my son and I are Going to Talledega in April.. it is 15.5 hours to get there.. we will stay in a Walmart in Knoxville TN and continue the next morning

I'm curious, too. Obviously it's somewhere up here in Canada because of the Canadian Tire store next door. I wonder if its some place on the way to Alaska.
