Trying to get back on subject.....

Most stores rely on local residents to support their businesses. When we pull into a parking lot with our Tundra and tt, we're 40' long and take up quite a few parking spaces while we shop. That can be money out of the merchants pocket if the locals can't park and go somewhere else. Even with the MH, we still take up 2 slots. And we're a bit heavier than your average car which may be a problem for some parking lots.

We spend some money, but not enough to make up for the people who are leaving with full carts.

So, while we may not like it, we can understand why they might not want our rv in their lot.

I say that the RV or MH campsites should bring their price down that's all. I traveled 23,000 KM last winter this in 4 and half months. The cheapest one I found was $55. US for one night. Oh yes some were $80.per night. I stayed for a month in Tucson $850. for the month plus $39. electricity. But the rest of the time was Walmart or rest areas.
It was a wonderful trip.

Agreed, THANK YOU!!!

I don't believe that anyone on here should be on anyone else just because they either do or don't elect to take advantage of a perk offered by a retail establishment.

As the OP in this thread, I have to say that 99% of everyone on here didn't read the sign in the original post... this thread was NEVER about overnight parking!!!

It would be fine by me if the mods locked this thread... otherwise it will probably just continue to be

Unless, that is, we can get back on topic!!!

Oh where is the fun of not being able to beat that horse even more dead... I do think it is great how the first 20 pages never even actually read the sign from the first post..

I read it. They don't want my rig in their parking lot at any time.

Doesn't really have anything to do with overnight camping. Similar to a 'no trucks' sign at many parking lots.

I'm just curious -- in your previous post you said:

"I say that the RV campsites charge just to much. Also boycotting Walmart free overnight parking."

Why are you boycotting Walmart free overnight parking?

I agree that many RV campgrounds charge too much but ye olde supply and demand will git ya every time. I imagine most CG owners are charging what the market will bear.

We know that the RV mfrs are doing very well -- RVs are more popular than ever. I've read numerous posts by people who say it is difficult to find a site -- especially in the more popular areas during peak season.

I'm afraid that under the circumstances, prices are not coming down anytime soon -- at least not until more GC's are built (and they will be).

Another common suggestion is that CG owners set aside some sites for RVers who simply want to park overnight. Basically a quieter, more secure version of dry camping in a store parking lot. With or w/o electric. Perhaps include access to a dump station and potable water -- or charge extra for that. That way people could choose between overnight:

* Dry camping
* Electric site
* Use of dump station if needed

No pool, no miniature golf, no full hook-ups. Just pull in, park for the night and leave in the morning.

I would think that would be very popular if the fees could be kept reasonable.

Popular, yes. Possible? Only if cost of land, cost of construction for those spaces, property taxes, insurance, and all the other costs associated with these extra spaces was "reasonable".

We'd all love a space we could merely pull into, plug in for our A/C and TV, then drive out the next day for less than $20. What many don't realize is that out of that $20, as much as 95% goes to debt service for the land and development costs, taxes, labor, etc.

I watch my Son with his own business. Out of every dollar he brings in he is able to keep 10-15 cents for himself and then has the government take their share in the form of income tax.

No, I doubt we'll see campgrounds adding cheap "overnight" spots anytime soon.

As for Walmarts, around here they are pretty much all "no overnight" places but I haven't seen any as No RV's Ever sites.

When I traveled this last May through WA, OR, ID, UT, WY, MT, CO, and NM, I found enough truck stops with huge parking lots as well as well as large Walmarts, again with huge parking lots, where I could stop to get my 8 hours of sleep. I also found quite a few small RV parks (on RV Parky) that fit my needs for an overnight at very reasonable rates. I used them to "dump" and refill my water tank as well as top off my batteries.

Of course this was while traveling in states with lots of wide open space left. As cities get bigger and more population spreads out, good luck finding stores willing to share their parking lots for free. Even some of our local Casino's are starting to charge for RV's but in turn they also have added hookups.

Lastly, the homeless population is also somewhat responsible for the unfriendly signs posted. Nothing adds beauty to their parking lots like a couple of 1974 vintage Winnebago's (left over from Expo 74 in Spokane) along with the same vintage Champion sitting there with blue or green tarps over them, a couple of broken down Weber grills, and an assortment of bicycles, piled alongside. To add the crowning touch, they often leave a long trail of unknown fluids flowing toward the nearest drain. Motor oil? Gasoline (doubtful as they probably ran out when they arrived), Sewage (very likely).

Times are a changing and not necessarily for the better.

We stayed in Sedalia Missouri last spring and found that the local Walmart had huge beams strung above every entrance at heights that would prevent almost any RV and for sure any Truck traffic from even entering the parking lot much less staying. A couple of mitigating factors though- Sedalia is home to the Missouri State Fair and I'm positive that the local business would be overwhelmed by those that choose to park for free when the Fair is underway. The State Fair Grounds offers 900+ full hookup sites for a very reasonable (we paid $15/night) fee. Nice place, safe clean and very friendly.

If a Walmart has a small parking lot, it most likely is a neighborhood Walmart grocery store...not meant for us RV'ers.

Any large Walmart Superstore will have a large enough parking lot so that us RV'ers can park way out in the wilderness and not take one single space from the locals driving their cars to get groceries.

I stop at lots of Walmart stores while towing my 5'ver to get supplies, but have never once stayed in the RV overnight.

Next time I go on a long trip I'm going to try the overnight Walmart experience...

My next outing (next week) is only about 270 miles away, so won't be doing that during this trip.

Took this at the Gunnison, Colorado Walmart store:

I live in Oldsmar Fl and Walmart here has signs but it is a city ordinance. There is even a Cracker Barrel which has same signs but people do overnight at both places.

Sometimes police just don't bother with enforcement.

In downtown Seattle people have tents set up on sidewalks all around the City and County buildings. They used to move them along but it got to the point that when they returned after doing that someone else was taking over the spot

My guess is that unless the business calls in a complaint, or a police officer is bored, nobody's going to get run off from the large parking lots.

We are beating a dead horse ! In most cases it is the landowner that must ask you to leave , not police ! I have stayed many , many times in parking lots and have never been asked to leave . Also police station parking lots , hospitals ,churches and a few cow pastures .

It's not taking business away from campgrounds because they wouldn't stop at the campground to begin with. Walmart overnighters are stopping to replenish supplies close to the highway and not camp out. Usually arriving at 6 or later, shop a bit, go to bed and back on the road to their destination by 7 am. Most campgrounds don't like overnighters and many places require a 2 night stay. So we wouldn't have stopped in this town if it weren't for Wal-Mart. Just keep on driving so none of the dollars and taxes go into the local economy... we'll keep driving when we find locations, cities, states with extreme ordinances prohibiting Wal-Mart overnighting. And there are some locations that do. Best thing is to be courteous and call ahead to your proposed stop over and ask the Wal-Mart manager if they allow overnight parking. If there is an ordinance or if perhaps Wal-Mart has had to instill some no overnighter parking rule they can tell you.

And, to the OP's recurring point about "nobody read the sign whose picture I posted"... Yes, we did. We got your point. And we believe you are interpreting it incorrectly.

Even though the sign says "No parking for trucks and RVs at any time" it does not necessarily mean what YOU think it means. To a lot of people, the word "RV" means "motorhome", and everything else is either a "camper" (truck-mounted shell) or "trailer" (5th wheel and bumper tow). The word "truck" generally refers to commercial trucks, and does NOT include pick-up trucks (which are generally thought of as passenger vehicles). Further, had the sign stated "no overnight parking", that would have implicitly allowed trucks and RVs to park there from sunup to sundown, which would be more disruptive to business than overnight parking.

The "collective wisdom" of the responses seems to be the suggestion that you CALL AHEAD to the Wal-Mart in question, so that the local management can tell you if they will allow YOUR type of RV to park temporarily while you shop for groceries, or park overnight after shopping for your groceries. They may, or they may not. Either way, you'll know how THEY interpret the sign that THEY posted...

Sometimes the signs (and the overhead beams at 10 or 12 feet) are there to keep the discourteous folks out - the ones who park their rig right up by the main entrance and stay overnight. That was the case for the Wal-Mart at Sullivan, MO that several posters have commented on. The local manager was perfectly happy to have us park overnight, even told us how to get into the parking lot through the entrance specifically set up for such purpose. They also suggested to us where the most level sites were to be found.

I've stopped overnight at Wal-Mart seven times. In every case, we called ahead to ask their management if overnight camping in our 5th wheel was OK, and if so, where they would prefer us to park. Only once were we told that we could not stay, and that was because the city council had passed an ordinance prohibiting it, and "encouraged" the police department to enforce it heavily. This was apparently done after several high-profile "breaking and entering" type robberies of the unsuspecting RVers parked at (you guessed it) that particular Super Wal-Mart parking lot. But even that manager asked which direction we were headed, and told us a couple of other Wal-Marts along our route (within 15-20 minutes drive time) that WOULD accept overnight parking.
