Upgraded mattress

First time owner here and knew that the mattresses were not up to snuff but wow. I attempted to sleep on the queen last night and after about 20 minutes had to get up come back in the house. Any suggestions to where you can buy on the spot? I see lots of places to order online but I like to know what I’m getting. Let me know what y’all have done for a good night sleep.

Some folks put mattress "toppers" on their beds but note camper beds ain't standard household sizes -- typically inches smaller. Measure yours before buying as someone else's may be different even in the same model camper.

Here's one source I found when looking for a topper for an old mattress at home. No direct experience but they have a lot of sizes.

We bought our queen size 4" topper from WalMart and I used an electric carving knife to cut it down to fit our RV Queen sized mattress. Works great for us.

If the mattress is really bad a topper wont help much. Most people buy a "bed in a bag" online and report a world of difference.

For the online bed in a bag offering we did just that.

Bought a Zinus short queen to replace what was in ours.

Loved it so much we replaced the home one with the same brand.

Had it in the coach a few years now and still love the way it sleeps. Works for us.

We tried several toppers and finally gave up and bought a new mattress. Nothing could help that horrible FR mattress

Similar story. Night one wasn’t that great.

Needing to preserve some of our hybrid mattress’ “foldability,” we add a topper (a 4" Allswell Queen from Walmart - and are *immensely* happy with it... practically better sleep than at home… and in the trailer to boot). The topper rides on the settee when we're traveling.

Nice thing is that you have a solution in hand that moment, can test it out, and can return it if it doesn’t work for you. Worth it, in our opinion.

Good luck.

You didn’t specify your RV model, what kind of mattress it has (foam, spring, two piece split, full or short queen etc.), nor what you dislike about the mattress, so it would be difficult to make any recommendations.

I haven’t come up with a solution for our RV mattress, but in my opinion it is too soft. The challenge is that ours is a short queen, two piece, wedge split mattress, so finding something firmer, I think, involves a full replacement, not a topper. There are custom mattress builders, from what I read.

To the people that responded that they added toppers, can the topper make the mattress firmer?

Same here. First Zinus was for the trailer and after a month long trip I ordered one for my home bed.

8" for the trailer and a 10" for the house.

One thing to note, pay attention to the instructions that come with most, if not all, bed-in-a box mattresses. Don't unbox, roll out, then plan on sleeping on it until it's been allowed to expand for the manufacturer's recommended time.

I put the one in the trailer and let it sit for a week before using it.

When putting the one in the house I slept in the trailer a couple nights first.

Was both were super comfy from the first night on them.

You dont need a custom mattress, they make memory foam RV sizes (do some searches to see the different brands) and it shows up in a box. Mine didnt show up in a box but I switched to memory foam 3 years ago and will never go back to a spring mattress! Mine was a little on the firm side so I added a 3" topper and now its perfect. If you have back issues this is the ticket.

Example

Our East to West has a King size bed and we bought a 4 inch Sealy memory foam topper from Kohls and it fits perfectly and is like sleeping on a cloud. Bought a couple full size for the bunks, but will have to cut them down to fit.

Out Arctic Wolf came with what they called a residential King size mattress. To put it bluntly, it sucked. I have never seen a residential mattress made from lite weight foam and only about 5 inches thick. We tried it but it was horrible. Purchased a memory foam mattress from Amazon and have used it for 2 summers now and love it. Good luck with yours

So, you say I don’t need a custom mattress even if mine is a two piece split mattress with an angled wedge on each section, and has sewn on flaps that anchor one section to the sides of the bed base? I’ll see what I can find.

I never had a sore back until I slept on a soft memory foam mattress. I wish I could get a firm spring mattress for my RV

Yes, check out tochta mattress, they make folding ones in custom sizes.

Won't help you immediately but I bought a Hybrid from Wilderness. Very happy with it and sleeping on it full time.
Want to see what you are getting will probably have to go with a topper.

Same here, slept on mine two nights and knew it had to be replaced. Cut it up with a razor knife once I got the mattress and there is nothing in them.

Some (not all) mattresses are R/V specific so do your diligence and measure.
Many (not all) R/V mattresses are standard size and common household toppers and sheets fit perfectly.

With that said, after much research, we've replaced the mattresses in our last two R/V with a mattress in a box from (of all places) Lowe's.

Their Serta Hybrid Full Body Support (w/coils) has proven to be a great mattress for both of us. We added a 3" foam topper to it and it is better sleeping than the $1800 mattress in our home.

Mattress comfort (like many things) is a very personal choice and what works for one, isn't good for someone else so take any internet forum advice for what it is worth.

That’s nice but I didn’t say our mattress was a folding type. It is two separate pieces with wedge shaped edges. But I’ll check out tochta anyway. Thanks.

For the past 10 years, my wife and I have been like most replies, putting a topper on our less-than-adequate mattress that came in our used rig. My first mistake is I should've mandated a new mattress when negotiating the rig purchase.

First, we had a 3" topper we got at Aldis supermarket which seemed to work pretty well up to changing rigs in 2019. So we got a new 1 1/2" topper on Amazon that improved comfort. However, one day as I was sitting on the bed putting on socks my DW commented on how compressed the mattress was. I too was shocked.

There is a local mattress store (Buffalo, NY) called Extreme Mattress that advertises "We sell mattresses' for less, A Lot Less". At the store, they told us most of their mattresses were made locally and we could get an RV short queen in almost any model. The salesman pointed out 3 or 4 of their most popular models for RV'ers. We landed up buying a 10-year guaranteed mattress that is heavy as what we remember mattresses to be, paying for a special order of $399. When we went to the store the first time they had the same model in stock in SQ and we would've saved $50 if we bought it then, but we had a function to get to so we lost out. We added a new 1" topper from Amazon for $60 to add a little body sculpting. It is the most comfortable mattress we have ever slept on, so much so that we bought one for our home, a full queen at the same price.

The moral of my story is to find a discount mattress store in your neck of the woods and see what they have in the size the OP needs. We tried the "Amazon" bed-in-box thing for the home, and thick mattress toppers for both the RV and home, but we both are so happy that we finally went for a good old-fashioned thick, heavily sprung traditional flippable regular ol' mattress.
