Water tank drain valve open or closed

After a trip and your rv might sit several weeks do you drain the water tank and water heater and leave the drain open or closed Or do you leave the water in it and drain valve closed until the next trip and then drain and refill??? What does everyone do???

If going to set for more than 6 weeks I will drain then tank but not the HW heater. After draining the FW tank I close the valve to keep bugs fro entering, If going to set for more than 2 months I will also drain the HW heater and check the anode to see if it needs replacing and after draining I reinstall the anode to keep critters out . Just my way of doing things.

Fresh Water Tank

I always keep water in the tank to reduce the amount of air to a minimum. End of season, I drain completely and fill along with bleach, and then run that water through the lines. Beginning of season, I drain, fill with fresh water, run through the lines, drain, and fill finally with fresh water. Have never had a problem, and we drink from the tap. If on my next trip I have hook ups, I drain to about 1/4th to 1/3rd tank for travel.

We camp at State parks quite a bit so fill up the tank when we arrive and open drain when we leave. Ask me how long it takes to fill the tank if I forget to close the drain. DW: "why is it taking so long?" then "why is the ground so wet"?

Never drain. We try to get out once a month but it is sometimes six weeks.
Not a single issue in 40 years.

We keep water in the fresh water tank and the hot water tank filled up. If a storm should not the power out we can always live in the camper for a few days

I also clean and stock my freezer, fridge and pantry in the spring and replace staples as we use them. That way we can be ready to hit the road on short notice. Also serves as our emergency preparedness kit.

I drain the tank and water heater at the end of our camping season. I leave the drain valve open, but covered with a piece of fiberglass screen, same for the water tank drain....the screen is to keep the crawlies out of the water system. Fill and sanitize and flush the system at the beginning of the season.

I also keep my fresh water tank full in case of unforeseen circumstances. I find that driving my Sunseeker 2250 with a full tank REALLY helps with the handling characteristics of my MH, too.

I also live in a drought area of California where we can't hose down the driveway (leaf blower), they have restrictions on sprinklers and you can't wash your car unless you have a shutoff valve at the hose. Dumping 35 gallons of fresh water onto the driveway might get the water police after me!!

I don't like to haul all that heavy water when we're traveling. We keep a small amount of water in the FWT and drain it between use. With an on demand water heater, draining isn't a big issue.

I like the idea of putting screen over the opening when the valve is open. Too many bugs around, like mud dauber wasps, that love water and might make our tank a home. Thanks for the idea.
