Weight Ratings

I was reading the specs on my TT and the Dry ship weight is 5880lbs and the Axle weight is 5075lbs. My question is, what does that mean? What weight rating should you go off of when figuring how much you are pulling? Any help would be helpful.

Thanks

What it means is that you have a tongue weight of 805lbs. The shipped weight is what the entire unit weighs. the axle weight is the dry ship weight minus the tongue weight.

Some say you should use the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) and then take 20% off that. I load the unit and take it to the scales and figure from there. That's the only way to know for sure what you're towing.

I agree with Bama--
the ONLY way to know what you weigh is to ....get weighed!!
Most truck stops have scales.
It's easy.
Pull up on the scales with your truck on one part and trailer on
another.
On some you can actually get truck front axle on one, truck rear axle
on another and trailer on a 3rd.
Push the button on the intercom and tell them you want to be weighed.

If they ask if you want 1 weight or 2 they are asking if you are going to
get weighed hitched and un-hitched to find tongue weight.
That part is up to you.

When they say OK, pull off and go inside to pay and get your printed weights.
Usually costs about $9 or something like that for a dual weight.

Many/most trailers probably don't weigh exactly what the sticker says to start with,
then you add gear, food, clothes, water and BEER-- man it's a lot heavier!!!

Everybody should get weighed!

My numbers.......
hitched, loaded with half tank of water, food, beer and gear for 3 days
ready to camp.
Hitched weights--
Front axle 3100
Rear axle 3000
Trailer axles 3840
Total 9940

Dropped the weight bars and lowered the jack to take the weight off
the ball--
Front axle 2800
Rear axle 3020
Trailer 4020 including tongue jack
Total 9840

No idea why totals are 100 different unless I was on the scale
for the 1st weight and stood on the side for the 2nd.
Yeah, I actually weigh 155 but hey, they're used to weighing stuff
lots heavier than little ole me so I give 'em some slack on the numbers....
