What is the perfect travel trailer length?

Of course there are going to be many opinions on this, but just wanted to see what you think is the perfect balance where it is big enough to feel like you are not cramped and have room for storage, etc. but small enough where it is easier to maneuver and will fit in most campgrounds. I am talking about for a family of 4 so definitely something with bunks. I am thinking somewhere in the mid 20' range but was wondering at what point does it start to seem "big" where you are more limited where you can take it.

Our 26ft TT is perfect for us. It will fit in most national and state park campgrounds .
IMHO, any TT over 30ft would be too big.

I concur with Dan,We have a 26ft as well and feel its plenty big enough for our needs .Shop around, There are plenty of floor plans,Keep in mind your tow vehicle.

Our current TT is 34 feet 4 inches, rear living. Our old TT was 36ft, bunk house. For us this is good. Have never been to a national park, but this TT more than fits in state park sites listed at 30 ft in Ohio, NT, and PA. The smallest listed site in private CGs we have been in is 32ft. Private CGs sometimes barely fit what they list. When we were looking for a new TT, this one, I wanted a couple feet shorter and at least 500lbs lighter. This TT fit that. The 2 feet shorter makes navigating to our destinations easier, backing into sites, and backing into our drive way easier as well. It all comes to what is comfortable for you and what your TV will handle safely for you. If you have never towed any trailer much in life, stick with the shorter for your first TT. If you have towed trailers over the years I think you would be fine longer from the start. I have been dragging trailers around since I was 16. The 36ft didn't give me trouble navigating, just saw the advantage being a bit shorter. The 500lbs lighter because our 2007 Silverado 2500 GCVW was slightly over with the old TT. Now with the F250 the weight of our old TT would have been fine. In the end I like being a bit lighter than heavier for total GCVW and GVW.

Personally, the bigger the better.. I've got 4 kids two of which are now teenagers and the other two are close to being there.

Limits us a little for NP's.. though.. not like you can get a reservation at one anyway recently. Never had an issue at state or private campgrounds.. seems they're used to the larger RV's.

New one is a 36' bunkhouse.

You learn alot from your first trailer. You get a much better feel for what you like and don't like which you can take into account on your second. For me, I hated my slideouts. They were leaky and made access to the trailers interior impossible when they were closed. It's a bit more cramped but my current trailer has no slides which is SOO much better IMO.

Ours is a 26', but measures around 32' from hitch to bumper. There are many places we can't get into in our area, due to campground design and layout. But we have been working on a binder with maps of our local campgrounds and we "X" out the ones we don't like or won't fit into. Saves when it comes time to reserve. Then when booking in unfamiliar campgrounds look for longer sites.

If you are OK on hybrid trailers (with canvas bed fold-out), the Rockwood Roo has LOTS of room in a smaller size.

(I have one now that is 35feet and some days it is too long, I had one that was 30ft and easier to pull/control/work on). You should get one that has two slide outs (that will always work).




The adage is..... "The one that the wife tells you she wants..."

But.... The wife does not (drive) pull it or work on it when 'things' do not work.... compromise with facts and reason.

That is good to hear. The murphy bed does seem like a good idea since you only use the bed at night. A regular bed would take up a lot of room and some type of convertible bed or using the dinette would be a hassle to make everyday. The murphy bed just folds up already made and you just pull it down and it is ready to go, right?

30' anything under is too small. Very few of us go smaller.

My Puma 253FBS is 27'3" which works great for us. Fits on the driveway and since I double tow a short utility trailer for my quad, I'm under the the 20m maximum legal length (although this is Alberta, so no one cares about that).


I also camp in remote areas so a shorter unit fits in the better bush sites.

26 is perfect for two. Smaller and you go nuts if you are stuck inside.

If you can see the site on Google maps using satellite view you can use their distance measuring tool to measure the length of the site. Right-click on the map to get the context menu.

I used that to validate our ability to fit in a museum parking spot.
