If you are traveling interstate, stop at the first rest stop which is usually within a couple miles of the border, and get map. That is what I do. Though I admit, I almost never use them.

Gmacklem, you can always use them as wall paper. What a great collage they would make, especially in the bathroom! LOL

Google maps just showed a slow down and the minutes of delay. We than checked out WAZE and found out the status of the accident such as I24 closed because a medi-copter landed on the highway. The updates were within 2-3 minutes of what was going on. Also, if the OP used a tablet computer (iPad etc.) connected to his cell phone service they could use Apple Maps, Google, WAZE or whatever GPS and pinch to enlarge the detail as much as needed. Even using my cell phone during the I75 crash I was able to expand the Google Maps to show an alternate route to take if I could get off of the highway. And I wonder since the OP is using old school maps (which my DW likes to follow along during all of our trips, car or RV) and the Mrs. has difficulty reading the fine detail why they don't get an also old school nice size magnifying glass to help.

when its time to find a alternate route its time to find a parking lot and go shopping or stop and eat because everyone else is using the alternate route also
