Since we often use our 5er as a "guest house" when we have family visitors at our home, we usually keep the fresh water tanks about half full all the time. Before we set out on a long trip, we drain the FW into a series of buckets and water our lawn & garden. I do like the idea of keeping a few gallons in the tank while driving, though, in case there is an emergency traffic shut down. Good suggestions all around on this thread.

On the street in front of the house where there is a storm water drain.

I wonder how much money I could make selling use of the bathroom to others stuck in traffic with me?

Never know... you might get rich!
It's not uncommon in our neck of the woods for the Turnpike/Interstates to close due to bad weather in the winter or from accidents. I often hear from Tour Bus drivers who make a $1 a head (pun intended) from nearby motorists who are stranded in those back-ups and are needing to use the facilities.

The street in front of my house, where it goes down the storm drain and into our pond, or the paved storage lot where it runs off into a field.

My fiver rides better and gets rid of 90% of the chucking because I leave my fresh water tank at least half way full. When we get home we use it to do an extra mop and cleaning then we dump it where it sits.

Yeah think that one thru though? When it is not your bathroom (visitors don't clean up after they make a mess) I would never want anyone using mine except family and friends!

I would not allow strangers in to use the bathroom. There was a post here on FRF where a persons meds were stolen during such an episode.

One of the main reasons for my 5er is my bed, my bathroom, and my fridge. Going to keep it that way.

I drain my FW tank while on the road. Don't see how FW is any different than rainfall on the road.
Now draining gray water is much different since it contains soap, oils and food particles. I feel it it should be drained at a dump station.

X2 and if you are traveling 50-55 mph, it won't even leave a trail. Much adieu about nothing.

Drain it into the black tank and fill it up. I leave 10 gallons in the FW tank for the road trip home.

My policy is to never leave water in the fresh water tank or water heater because we've experienced that horrid rotten egg phenomenon doing that.
But we do keep 5 gallons or so in the fresh tank to wash our hands and flush the toilet when making stops to/from camping.
When returning home, I always drain the fresh water tank after I park and plug in the camper while we are unloading it. I, also, open valves in the bath and kitchen and then drain the water heater and also the two low-point drain lines before parking her. (At the house.)
For dry and boondock camping, I do fill up the fresh water and ensure the water heater is full before heading out. (I trust my water at the house...not so much at campsites.) We try to use up as much of the water in the fresh water tank as possible and, before dumping the tanks, I'll use my Home Depot buck to drain some (but not all) of the fresh water and dump it into the toilet to help get a good flush out.
So far, with the new TT, no rotten egg smells....thank Goodness!! (But if any of you do get that, just dump some plain bleach into the tank, let it sit for a few hours, and flush it out a few times.)

I'm not sure what the preferred method is. Thanks for your help!

If you search this subject you will find many many pages of people's thoughts,,,
We drain ours when we get home in our driveway,,, not on the HWY !!!
How about spending a couple of days cleaning & polishing your vehicle,,, and then have someone dumping water in front of you on the HWY !!!
Back when we had property up north we drained it as we drove out of the forest on private dirt roads !!!

I do not condone people who dump their fresh water out on the highway but it's probably the cleanest thing to get on your vehicle while out driving. Between bugs, bird poop, dirt, rocks and the occasional litter bug, I'd welcome some fresh water.

I agree.
For all those that complain about someone emptying their fresh tank going down the road, I wonder how many of them were actually ever behind someone that did?
We often travel with a couple others in our group. When one (or more) lets the water trickle out going down the road, the rest of us aren't 'splattered' with water.
If the water poured out the drain the size of a fire hose... maybe... but the tank drain cracked partially open isn't any different than the water coming out of the A/C condensate drain of every vehicle that goes down the highway.
Much adieu about nothing.

I've been riding for 50 years and I can tell you if I came around a corner after an RV had been there with his FW tank open, I wouldn't even notice, nor would the bike. Probably wouldn't notice if there was a 20 rig convoy that had been there doing it.
Let 'em drain boys.....
