Winnie, Tex to Galveston, Tex

Hopefully there is someone on here who lives in the Winnie, Texas or Port Bolivar area. Wife and I are planning a trip to Galveston from Louisiana, and really don't want to pull our fifth wheel through Houston. So we are planning on turning south at Winnie and crossing the Port Bolivar Ferry. Our fifth wheel is 34 feet long with a height of 13 feet. I checked the Texas dept of public safety website and found no height restrictions in that area, but it's always nice to chat with someone local.

Thanks

i have seen 18 wheelers and a lot of fifth wheel. Your size is smaller than 18 wheeler. Be cautious as to when you plan on crossing. Some times on weekends you can have a pretty long wait(1hr plus). It's a meet way to get on the Island. Some times we walk on and just cross back and forth.

You will have no issues...we have property on the Bolivar Penisula and live outside of Beaumont - travel through Winnie to the Peninsula all the time in our 35 Class A Motorhome. There are tons of RV traffic into Galveston. We have stayed in Galveston numerous times with our MH. Traveling via the ferry is no big deal - only real requirement is to ensure your propane is turned off.

Where are you staying in Galveston? Almost anyplace is good on the island. Easy to get around most places.

Honk when you go buy

Ole Buzzard and cmalberto; Thanks so much for the information. That helps a lot and That's the route we'll be taking. Is there a convenient place in Winnie to fill up with diesel?

Sure - I-10 and 124 which is your exit. You have a truckstop on the south-east corner with stations on the other 3 corners.

Awesome! Those stations are suitable for a 13' tall fifthwheel?

Personally - I would do the truck stop as I like the high speed easy to get in lanes of one. I haven't pulled a trailer in a number of years but always appreciated not having to weave in and out to get fuel. However, all will handle your height if I remember correctly.

Perfect. I sure don't mind the truck stops. A couple cents more for fresher fuel from larger tanks is fine with me. Thanks so much for your wise suggestions.

We always take the ferry when going to Galveston to avoid driving through Houston. There are usually always travel trailers on the ferry when we cross so you should not have a problem.

To Galveston

We just came through there last week with a 36 foot 5th wheel. Nice easy drive to ferry on west side, and nice country drive on east end. we came through there from Port Aransas heading back to Ontario. Only thing I had was a spare propane tank in the bed of the truck. No portable fuel containers are allowed on the ferry. They let me put it in the trailer so it was out of sight. Also have to shut off all propane tanks. Other than that it is a lot nicer trip that going the other way through the big city.

Road construction from the Louisiana line west for 7-8 miles. Construction on the east side of Beaumont with the 3 lane through Vidor dropping to 2. Lots of idiots wait too long to merge from the outside lane to the middle. I-10 in Beaumont seems to have more narrow lanes. Both areas subject to wrecks and delays.

I live in Orange and and when I go west I take hwy 62 south at the Flying J, west on 87 through Bridge City and take hwy. 73 through Groves and follow 73 to Winnie and then I-10 towards Houston or hwy 124 from Winnie to the beach. There you pick up 87 again.
The distance is the same but a little slower. Four lane divided and very good road. If going through Bridge City you will see the tallest bridge in the South-currently being painted.

There is a terrible concrete section of I-10 on the west side of the bridge around MM 27. until you reach asphalt for 3-4 miles so take it slow.
