I've used SureFire for weapon mounted, I'd trust my life on them, but expensive. Streamlights hand held were always very durable. I have a couple older Maglight 3 cells I'm thinking of upgrading to LED, saw upgrade kits on Amazon for around 20 bucks. Flashlights sure have come a long way from the Ray O Vac crap they sold when I was a kid, where you always had to thunk it with the palm of your hand to make it come on.

An LED 2 D cell Maglite is only $20.99. 79% 5 star ratings on Amazon.

Fenix. I have too many to list them all. From headlamps to flashlights. They are bulletproof and bright. I won’t need to buy any more till I’m dead and gone as they should all last me that long, but there will always be something smaller and brighter!

Nothing bothers me more than a light that requires 3aaa batteries.

I tried their first couple of attempts with LED, but they just didn’t cut it, so I began to look at other options. If Maglite was able to keep up with the rapidly advancing flashlight industry, I would still be a loyal customer. Even now, Maglite can’t touch the performance of their competition and it seems they are relying on their name and the lack of consumer education to keep them afloat. I would again buy Maglite if they could ever pull themselves out of the 1990s and make a product equal to or better than what’s out there today.

I had to smile when I read your post about how Maglites original bulbs could not take abuse. I probably have a dozen that have to be 20 years old or older. I think I have replaced three bulbs. All the rest still have the replacement in the base. Of course most of mine don't get used a whole lot. I've got one that was run over by a tractor and a rotavator in the field. It's the one I use the most. Looks like hell, but it is still working

I love my Chinese made 2000 lumen flashlights with an adjustable beam and 5 settings. The first three settings are the degree of brightness, the next one is flashing, and the last setting is SOS. The length is 5 to 5 1/2 inches depending on how tight of a beam you want. At the time they came in a two pack for $19.95. These things are built tough and the beam is like a darn spotlight.

The HF flashlight I posted above uses 3 AAA batteries. Lasts me months at a time. Better than a lithium battery unless you buy a rechargeable one.

I buy AAA batteries from Costco so not a big deal.

I understand, but that flashlight weighs just less than one pound without the two D cell batteries and it only projects 168 lumens. I’m just saying, this is the typical Maglite offering and it just doesn’t compare to what the competition has to offer these days.

I’m not saying this isn’t an ideal or favorite flashlight for you. I am only backing up my opinion on Maglite.

You and I obviously have different uses for our flashlights and treat them in different ways.

168 Lumens??? Geez. The cheapo ones I posted above are 1800 lumens, are hard, hefty plastic and have yet to fail. Wait'll you get cataracts! You'll need way more than 168 lumens. LOL

My new favorite flashlight... I have them all over my truck, camper and home.
Uses 18650 or AAA... looks the same and probably is the same as the Harbor Freight that Babock posted

I tried those. Both broke by the third use. Wouldn't turn on or while walking would suddenly turn off. And I HATED having to cycle thru all setting to turn on/off.

Ok here’s my all time favourite headlamp. I’d be hard pressed to pick fav flashlight as I have favourites for different things.

For EDC/keychain:

https://www.fenixlighting.com/produc...ix-flashlight/

This headlamp has made gifting easy for me and each time I give one, I’ve been asked where they can buy another.

Runs on a single AA with included extension tube or single 123 as well as 123A rechargeable.

For fun too - check out this one by fenix:

These are all nice flashlights. That TK72R is a monster — not something you could throw in your pocket, but I can think of situations where it might come in handy. It is rated at 9,000 lumens on the high end with a great light color, but it can only sustain that for about four minutes before it is automatically kicked down to 3,600 lumens (which is still incredibly bright) due to the built-in heat protection. Who really needs 9,000 lumens for more than four minutes, anyways?

If I could get over my aversion for buying things made in China when something of equal or better quality is made and available in the USA, I would definitely have a couple of Fenix flashlights in my collection.

Bruce

You apparently have never encountered BigFoot in the woods at night.
