Boiled battery

I'll start by saying I saw this the other day but can't find it but I can home to an awful smell coming from battery box. Yup boiled over and can't see any fluid in it.

I have a palomino solaire hybrid 213x not sure what converter I have. About a month ago I put my year old 12v group 31 battery in with a brand new one. Due to short wires coming from the camper I hooked both to the old battery then connected the new one in parallel. For the past month with out a problem I was hooked to shore keeping them charged.

Now you might have seen my post saying I ran the batteries down till the co alarm went off and then unhooked them. Came home, plugged into the house, hooked the two batteries back up the same and today only the older one boiled.

Is it ruined? Why did it boil in one day and not a month? I don't have a tester. Might take it to battery shop. And gotta pick up water.

How can I prevent this going forward? Put newer battery in front? Do I need a charger controller of some sort?

I'm not savvy on terminology for all this so bare with me lol

Could it have anything to do with low ventilation in the battery box

How you wired the batteries was one problem and pairing different age/brand batteries could also been a problem.

Suggest you Google "the 12 Volt Side of Life"
It will teach all about the 12v system and properly wiring batteries.

And get a multimeter.

I was told the only advantage to wiring from camper positive to one battery and negative to the other would be to know if there was a bad connection between the two. Which makes sense. But are you thinking the fact the camper was only hooked to one it cause to to over charge? If done the other way would it be OK?

Last year with just one battery I always kept it plugged in at home and never had a problem

Bad cell in year old battery is what caused it to boil. Best part, 2 year warranty, guy said sorry and handed me a new one. Now I have two new batteries, one a month old. He sweats hooking both cables from camper to one battery will be fine. If not I have to splice and extend the wires to reach

When older Pb-acid batteries are deeply discharged it is possible to get deposits that short some of the plates. This caused the balance of the battery to overcharge heat up and boil off the water. The battery may appear to take a charge but for all intensive purposes it is junk. You should always try to use batteries of the same age when using multiples.

I tried to budget, get one each year. Next year I think I'll get solar. With that and two batteries we should be good

Cause unless you put a bank of at least eight 6v golf cart batteries somewhere, that ain't gonna happen.

Plus about $10k in lithium batteries.

Just kidding guys but would be nice. I'm just thrilled I had warranty and didn't have to buy a new battery. Plus now the 2 are of the same age like you all recommend. And I still have my old battery as back up
