Replacing floor in 2005 Stampede
The floor in our 2005 Palomino Stampede got spongy and soft in several areas. I decided to rip up the old flooring and find out where the leak is and replace the rotting wood. For the new floor I am using the following materials:
- Tar paper
-1/8 hardboard
- Greenboard foam
- 5/16 plywood
- Clear penetrating epoxy sealant (to harden the rotted wood under the walls where it meets the frame)
- Epoxy bilge paint
- Black Dicor lap sealant
- Vinyl planking
After removing the front dinette booth and chest of drawers at the front, I cut out a section of linoleum and saw that the wood was completely saturated. I also discovered that FR used standard white styrofoam (which asorbs and holds water), as insulation. The bottom layer of plywood was also completely saturated and coming apart into a paper-like consistency. I am starting at the front of the camper and dowing small sections at a time.
After cleaning out the rotted wood and allowing the tyvek-like underlining to dry, I layed down a section of tar paper. I cut pieces of the hardboard and painted it with the bilge paint to provide water resistance. The next layer is the green foamboard insulation. The 5/16 plywood is the decking and I painted both sides with the bilge paint.
Once I reinstall the furniture, I will caulk the edges of the decking where it joins the walls. After the furniture is screwed down, I will install the vinyl planking as a free-floating floor.
I will update progress is made.
