30 HFS5 wheel bearing toast

Hi all,

Fried a wheel bearing on the way home from vacation today. Made it home luckily. Plan is to replace the entire unit—hub, bearing, brakes, etc. Anyone know what I should be ordering for this? Size of brakes, are these Dexter axles, etc. Anyone who’s been through this, I’d appreciate the advice. Thanks in advance!

Best bet is to get under your trailer, find the axle tag or sticker and get the manufacturer and number. Then contact them with that information.

Contacted my RV dealer today. Was told that “this axle is no longer made” and I’d need to order an entire new axle assembly, that there are no hubs/bearings/brakes available. I find it hard to believe that you can’t get parts for an eight-year-old axle. Anyone else have this problem? Any thoughts on how to proceed? It looks like etrailer lists the hub and bearing assembly for my camper, wondering if anyone has any experience with it...

Like NMWildcat suggested find the info on the axle and contact the axle mfr.

Then contact the manufacturer of the axle (most likely Dexter) or a knowledgeable source like e-trailer.

The parts you mentioned are determined by the spindle attached to the axle and spindles haven't changed much over the years. Just axle beam/tube/mounts.

Dealer is either ignorant or is trying to oversell you.

Take both bearings to a trailer shop and they can more than likely hook you up.

Odds are Autozone could fix you up if you have the axle # and an intact set of bearings. There are numbers on them.

Thank for all the advice. I wound up ordering and entire hub/bearing kit from etrailer and replaced the whole thing. It looks like the cotter pin broke, allowing the castle nut to walk out, resulting in all kinds of end play and the outer bearing grenaded itself. Checked the other 3 and all is good. Had to adjust the brakes to get the new hub assembly to spin freely, but it’s all good again. Thanks again for all the advice!👍

I also told my dealer parts guy that he should look up etrailer once in a while…🙄

for anyone else that has bearing ordering issues

axle manufactures normally don't make the bearings , brake parts and shoes.
The bearing manufacturer puts their part numbers on the flat part of the bearing
https://www.etrailer.com/faq-popular...-bearings.aspx
If you are out on the highway, most automotive parts stores and trailer repair places can get you going again

minor damage to the axle bearing surfaces .... gouges , scratches etc
can be carefully filed down using a small flat file or use a flat stone to get off any high spots.

The inside of hubs where bearings sit .. if damaged.
best to order new hub.
