fuel tank

I have a 2013 Nitro xlr that is suppose to have a 30 gal fuel tank for pump station and fuel supply for the Gen set.The problem is it only accepts 16 gal on fill up and produces 16 gal on pump out....I took the outside dimensions, did the math, and it should hold 30 gal. Where do I go from here?

Did the gauge show empty or did you run out of fuel and then filled the tank? A faulty fuel gauge would make sense to me.

Ran out twice filled up twice. Fuel gauge read correct full and empty both times.

You measured the tank and it seems like everything checks out. What if the tank is plumbed incorrectly and the generator draws fuel only from the top half, or is there something inside that tank taking up space. Another possibility is that the fill cap does not vent properly and you get vacuum buildup inside the tank.
Just guesswork.
Edit: Could you have a double wall tank, that would explain what's going on.

Yep I will see if I can dip the tank to see if there may still be fuel in it. You might be rite stuff may be only using top half of tank. Thanks for the ideas, I will be back on here to let you know what I find.

Almost looks like it, could use a clean wooden dowel or the like and check how much is left when it runs dry, or maybe try to get some inside dimensions.
But please don't use the matchstick method

Edit: Oops, I'm slow at typing. Meant to add to turbs' post.

Thanks for asking
Here's the latest. Tried to dip the tank but filler neck is funky with to many corners. Did the sonar thing (tap on side of tank), sounds empty. The wife and I are heading to the salt flats this Friday for speed week so will fineness the filling process and see if it is an air bubble cutting me off early at the gas pump. Hopefully I'll figure something out. I will post the results.

I know our XLR has 2 15 gal tanks. One is straight to the generator and one is to the pump.

One other reason maybe this. My 2013 Road Warrior 30C that I just sold had a single 30 gallon fuel cell. I could only get approximately 20 in and 20 out but when it was "empty" (pump was sputtering and fuel gauge read empty) the generator would still run just fine. I did some research and found that it was set up this way on purpose. The factory set the fuel pick up for the pump higher than the one for the generator inside the tank. That way you could never pump your tank dry by accident and then have nothing left for the generator. Kind of like a reserve.
