Honda gen EU3000i and a/c

Just got back from our first trip out in our 2012 27HFS. Our Honda generator EU 3000i would run the 13.5K a/c but only if we used the battery disconnect and turned the batteries off. Fridge was on gas and we were not using the microwave oven. Does this sound right? Anyone else have a problem with the generator tripping if the batteries were not disconnected?

read this list
http://www.forestriverforums.com/for...aws-17300.html

your 13.5k is 12 to 16 amps running. more when first started .
you can see how fast these things add up before your at your limit of the gennie .

lets say
16 amps for a/c more for starting
13 amps for w/h
8 amps for fridge in electric mode
8 amps for converter when charging full
8 amps for tv antenna booster
fridge in gas mode 2 amps .

im guessing you were plugged into the 20 amp out let ?
THE math is easy here .

That 3000 watt genny should run a 13,500 BTU AC without a problem, as long as all other 110 volt items are turned off, as well as 12 volt items. With it being able to start the AC with the batteries disconnected, sounds like maybe the batteries are discharged, and a lot of the amps is going through the power center to charge the batteries. Next time charge the batteries some 1st, cut off all 110 and 12 volt items (and fridge on gas only like you are doing), start the AC fan on low and let that run for a minute, then start the AC. I take those precautions with my Yamaha EF2400Is, and it will run the AC without a problem. Surely, a Honda 3000 should do the same.

Make sure the fan is set to run continuosly. Also make sure the generator is not set on the economy mode(runs faster on regular mode)as the economy mode idles too slow for when the A/C compressor cuts in.

I have run our A/C and used the coffee maker at the same time with our EU3000is.

had the same issue with mine last week. As long as all other appliances are not running when the AC starts we can run all the other lights. You might want to take it in and let the pros look at it rather than have an isssue when you are in the woods

whats to really look at ?

a/c requires in the neighborhood of 16 amps that only leaves about + or- 4 to 6 amps . you can have a 10k gennie and if it only has a 20 amp plug in it thats all you get .

The EU3000 has a 23 amp outlet that I adapt to the 30 amp trailer plug.

Yup...What Fonzi said...double check the water heater and any other possible loads. The battery charger/ 12 v supply should only draw a few amps, anything 12v down stream of it may be a lot of amps in "DC", but is nothing for the 110v powered coverter to supply for all your 12v needs, including charging low batteries at the same time. Begin with your ac on low mode and switch up once its running if you have to, but your genni should be able to run the 13.5 on high all day long!

I have a Kill-A-Watt (model P4400 from P3 costs about $20) that is very handy in determining your load. You can just plug it in and push the WATT button and it will show how many watts you are drawing.

It maxxes out at 1800 watts, but still is nice to see what you are drawing without any big loads.

09grizzly1

It does not have a 23 amp outlet.
it has a 2 15 amp duplex and a 30 amp twist lock
Gennie is rated at MAX 25 amp
Rated 23.3 amps
Just sayin

I'm not saying that the generator won't run the a/c because
it will. Any other loads is putting your amps at Max and you run
The risk of lowering your voltage therefore compromising your
Appliances. 13.5 k air on a hot day will draw 16 amp then add in a
Coffee maker at 6 to 8 amps takes you to 22 to 24 amps
This gennie is only rated at 23.3!

If you just run the a/c your fine

We had also used an adapter for the 30a locking plug on the generator. I will have to check on the w/h. We thought it was on gas but this was the 1st trip out using it so I'll check again. Just got the water heater Users Guide emailed to me from Suburban yesterday as it was not included in the paperwork from the dealer. Thanks for all the replys.
