New Sneakers for the 30HFS-5

Finally got around to ordering and installing the Sailun S637s on the camper to replace the factory Westlakes. No complaints about the Westlakes, but I wanted to jump up to the S637 for the added load and speed capacity. They certainly are beefy! In fact, they're actually a little bit bigger than the Westlakes they replaced, even though they're the same size on the sidewall--235-80R16. There isn't nearly as much room between the tires now. I'll report back after the first trip.

as a general observation you could have up to 3/32 of additional tread depth per tire so that could be one of the explanations.

BTW I'm changing out my Westlake tires this week to Carlisle E rated tires.

I thought that too about the tread depth, but even when the camper was brand new, there was more room in between the tires than there is now with the Sailuns. I don't think I'm going to be able to use my Bal-X-Chocks anymore!

Such great quality control in tire manufacturing. Thanks God gun manufacturing is more consistent, and auto parts, and electronics, etc. Can you imagine buying a receiver for your AR-15, or an alernator for your truck from Napa, or a new motherboard for your laptop, only to find out its too big to fit your application? Crazy.

I get it for sure.
I worked for dodge/chrysler in the 70's & 80's. hahahahahaha

BTW my 5th wheel has 15" & if my memory is correct when I checked the brand you installed they didn't offer 15". :-(

Taranwanderer, I was really excited to see your post because I decided to upgrade my tires to an all-steel tire like the Sailun 637S but in a different brand that my local tire supplier has in stock from China, I think the name was called Advantage. Would you mind sharing with us where you got yours and their cost? My tire guy sells a Chinese tire from Sansui or something like that and they call them Advantage for $135/each. I was a little concerned about changing to a tire so much heavier then the OEM tires and one with such a stiff sidewall. I talked to an old time tire salesman and he was concerned that if I ran this tire at recommended 110 psi that I might shake my toy hauler apart. I had a blowout on my center axle of my triple trailer and it took out the back tire on its way out the back. I look forward to hearing from you.

I picked them up on eBay, but they were from Trailer Tire and Wheel--same price on their own website as their eBay price, $165/tire.

They certainly are heavier than the Westlakes they're replacing, but I can't see how that could be a bad thing in any way, regardless of the pressure they're running. Why would running at 110 "shake your trailer apart?" From the ride stiffness? Does anyone think the ride is going to be drastically different at 110 than it was at 80? I'm planning to run them around 95 anyway. Anyone else have any insight into this?

And my wheels are 16", so I don't know what they offer for a 15"-- haven't looked.

15" tire replacements

Anyone wishing to replace their China made ST tires with a better alternative, Nokian Tire out of Finland (& soon from Laverne, TN) is a heavy duty tire company that makes a Light Truck tire in a 15" size (235/75R15LT Rotiiva AT) that can be used on an RV. The quicker you get away from an ST tire the better off you will be. The new Endurance from Goodyear may be an exception, but only time will tell. No one says, "I am disappointed in the LT tires I bought!" Send the message to the ST tire industry that RVers are not going to accept poor quality, longevity, and the long list of excuses as to why a tire fails!

I have had the Sailun tires on my 5er for a while. I run them at 110 psi and they run great. I monitor them with my TPMS and the psi stays under 122 and the temperature has not gone above 102. That's pretty good since I live in Florida and drive a lot on I95 with the outside temp around 95 degrees. Every time I check the pressure before leaving, it is still 110 psi.

This is a whole other debate that has been beat to death. I almost bought LT tires for my 5er. However, while doing my research and talking to a few truck drivers, they informed me that LT tires would not hold up as well as ST tires when it comes to the turns that a 5er makes. When you back up your trailer, often your tires spin on the asphalt without actually rotating which is hard on the sidewalls. I don't think all ST tires are off limits.

Agree that this is a topic that has been beat to death. Some people prefer STs and some prefer LTs. The big issue that I have with LT's, and I've said this a million times on these forums, is that you typically have to go up a size or two to get the same load carrying capacity in an LT that you get with the smaller ST. Yes, you get a tire that is capable of going faster with the LT, but if you take an equal sized LT and ST and put them side-by-side, the ST will almost always have a higher load carrying capacity, and that's really what you want in a trailer. If you have the room in your wheel wells to go up a size and use the LT, great. But that isn't always an option on every trailer, sometimes there just isn't room to go up a size.

Me--I'll stick with the load carrying abilities of STs, esp since the new Sailuns have a load cap of 4080# each! Overkill is underrated.

I originally wanted the sailuns but discount tire was running a sale on the Samson G rated all steel tire 235:80/16. With the added convenience of just bring my camper to the store, I decided to go that route and I'm very happy with them. These things are tough. Before they mounted em I pressed down on the west lakes and then the samsons and it's almost the equivalent of stepping on a pillow and then a brick.... no exaggeration.
