Generator insulation ?

Hi all , i have a 4000 watt cummins Onan RV QG 4000 evap , 4kyfa , was cleaning out the motor compartment and found what looked like a mouse/rats nest inside , blew it out with the air compressor , (was loose and scattered ) upon a closer look , its looks like insulation ?, so my question is it insulation or ? if so , whats it in there for ? sound , heat ? any and all ideas welcome , thanks ! Dennis

I just caught you post.
We have the same generator, no insulation, noisier than heck. We take our 3000 watt Honda when we are having to run the generator a lot because it is so much quieter.
If it's a short stay, 3-4 days we will put up with the Onan but if it's a week or more we just take the "quiet" one. I wish the Onan wasn't mounted under our bed because on a hot day you can't take a nap with it running, actually you can't do anything with it running but run the microwave and A/C.
This is where we like our solar panel, it keeps the batteries charged so we don't have to run the gen to keep them up.

As with anything.. personal preference.

I sleep well with static noise like a fan running, AC blowing, generator running. Do I wish it was a little quieter (yes mine is under the bed too)? Yeah. I've wondered if I applied Dynamat to the stainless steel box that surrounds the generator if it would help. Oh well.
