F150 Eco + Crusader 290

Hi,

Getting ready to move up to a fifth wheel. After months of looking, the truck will come this year followed by the trailer. We've seen many brands and want to keep the package under 10,000lbs.
Ford dealers insist that the F150 EcoBoost with the Max Tow Package will have no problem with 9,000lbs. We like the Crusader 290 (value, layout etc.) and this unit comes in at a dry weight of about 8,300lbs. Hitch weight of about 1,300lbs.
Just wondering if others have a similar setup? My research says this combo will be fine. Thoughts?

The hitch weight will be your limiting factor.
I know the F-150 Ecoboost with the hd payload package come with about the highest ˝ ton payload ratings, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. Whatever it is you know that anything loaded in the truck will have to be subtracted. GVWR - Actual truck weight loaded for camping (include hitch weight & people) = payload capacity.
The hitch weight of the 5'er will probably go up 150 to 200 lbs depending on how much you load and how you load it. So you possibly could end up with a hitch weight of 1500 lbs. Just make sure after loading the truck you have enough payload capacity to carry it.

Let us know what you decide on and post some pics.

ID:	12458 Do all the research that you can !! I am a Ford retiree ...so here goes..Look into the "heavy Duty Payload " package along with the "Max Towing Package..A Super Crew with a 6 1/2 foot box ..3.73 limited slip rear end..3.5 eco-boost..is the way to go ..you can do it.... in either a XL or XLT Model..with the XLT ..you should also get the 7 lug Aluminum wheels.. BUT..remember..how much weight ..do you plan on carrying in the 5th wheel and Truck..

Thanks. The Max payload is 3,100lbs, so I should be okay. The Ford dealer said that if the trailer did not sit level all loaded they could add an extra spring for about $350.

Super, nice to get it from the source! I didn't realize that you could get both packages together. I thought it was one or the other. Will look into it! THANKS!

As Gary mentioned, the limiting factor is what the truck can carry, not what it can pull.

If you had ordered the truck with the max payload option, the truck's GVWR would have been 8200 lbs instead of 7600 (or is it 7650 lbs). The extra payload capacity would be able to handle a pin weight of 1800 + lbs. People have reported their loaded truck weight at 6200 lbs.

With the lower payload capacity without the max payload option, the loaded pin weight, guessing 1600 lbs, will be over your truck's GVWR and perhap the rear axle weight rating. You'll have to be very conscious of loaded pin weight.

Yes, hard to believe. Here are some figures from the Ford Chart for 3 different versions:

Regular Cab 4x2 145" 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 3100

SuperCrew 4x2 157" 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 2620

SuperCrew 4x4 145" 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 1900

Down here in Louisiana on our trip from MN. LOTS of 5th wheels down here. Quite a few are being pulled by 1/2 ton trucks! People are doing it; but I would go with dretired's advice. It will all come down to pin weight and AVAILABLE payload capacity.

So what truck have you ordered...regular, super cab or crew cab? Short box or long box?

Not purchased yet.
Will probably be the crew cab with at least the 6.5 box (not the short box).

You should be good to go with either of the first two options.

My son has an 2011 ecoboost and really likes it. He puts alot of miles on it, equally city and highway. Overall he's getting 18+ mpg. That's without towing a tt.

When are you getting the 5'er? We have owned our PT tt for almost 1˝ years. Completely satisfied with it. RV Guy is a member of this forum and president of PT. He helps us with any problems we may have.

Keep us up to date and remember.......
.......we love pics!

Personally, I would want the full floating rear axle that comes on a 3/4 or 1 ton truck for any 5th wheel camper.

dretired made his post while I was typing my last one.

I guess it depends on how much driving your going to do when not towing. You may want the mpg that the ecoboost gives you.

If I was in the market, I would go with the F-250 myself.

Chap, the max payload package comes with a heavier rear-end, heavier spring pack, 7 lug hubs and LT tires.

Dave..Not to get picky..Its the "HEAVY DUTY PAYLOAD PACKAGE" and the "MAX TOWING PACKAGE" some people ( not you ) are confusing them ...

Ford list a 9 3/4" rear-end with the HD payload package.

If that heavier rear end includes a full floating axle, then that is a whole different ballgame.
