It's incumbent upon the selling dealer to verify the Vin is correct here in Florida they can get in pretty big trouble if they've done the paperwork incorrectly I'm not sure how it works in other states

We all live and learn...
3 times now, I have tried buying vehicles (A flat trailer, an ATV and a motorcycle) that the VIN did not match the paperwork (title). All three times the 'selling' party feigned surprise.

Nope. Sorry. The absolute FIRST thing I do when buying something with a VIN is to verify the actual VIN against the title.

Sorry for your pain, but think of how much trouble could have been avoided if you would have done that simple little thing.

.....and neither have I, ever. We assume it's hunky-dory....

Just for peace of mind I went out and checked both my units against the titles. Both VIN's match.... Whew.

Always lots of numbers on those serial number plates. I supposed mistakes can be made.

I realize I screwed up and should not have trusted anyone else with the title work. I guess I will learn from this mistake, I just bought a new truck last June, did not verify that but it all seems to match up just fine. I am not dealing with CW, they very abruptly told me they had nothing to do with it and to email a Tom Raper email address. I did that and this fella is jerking me around as well. My next step is to go to the DMV, I cannot just up and run over there, have to wait until Friday when I can get away from work a little early. Sure be nice to have my camper though, going to be darn near 70 for a 4 day weekend, could go out and enjoy it a little. I am loosing my patience and understanding. So yea I will take the blame, all of it, now I jsut have to wait to see who can jerk me around next.

I have so much sympathy for you and your family. What an ordeal. I would think a phone call to the DMV of your state would provide you with a path for resolution of the title issue, at least a starting point. The correction of miss typed serial numbers has to occur every once in a while. I would keep the conversation as simple as possible, stay truthful, but honestly you just have a title and paperwork, with the wrong serial number on it. See what DMV requires you to do to make it right. The insurance should be an easy issue, and the financial institution cares more about the payment.

Good Luck

Thanks everyone for your words of advice. Here is what I got from the former owner of Tom Raper.

"Hello,

We are actually waiting on a call back from the manufacturer…

We are going to pursue one of two courses of action:

1) We will contact all of the interested parties with an affidavit concerning our mistake, and instructing them to change the VIN to the unit you currently have in your possession.

or

2) We are finding out if Prime Time has the authority as the manufacturer, to reissue the VIN plate and re designate the unit. We are awaiting that phone call.

Just as soon as we obtain that response from Prime Time, we will know which course of action to take."

I am also in direct contact with prime time (as you know) so between the two I hope to get an answer. I am headed to the DMV Friday when I can get off early to see if I can bypass all of them and take care of it myself.

You do not have to take the blame for some chowder head's mistake, or accept advice from somebody rhat has never been through what you have. Enjoy your camper and have a good summer.

Got a call from the former Tom Raper owner. He is Filing an affidavit to get the VIN# changed on all my paperwork and the other fella's paperwork and will be contacting the Illinois DMV to get that fixed as well. I am also going to the DMV Friday to make sure it happens. I should get my camper back next week, all warranty work is doen and all they have left is to take it to the rain booth to check it for leaks. I feel they will not be wanting to give me any further compensation for the BS I have been through with what should have been a simple process. There will be an email drafted by me, sent to my lawyer to be sent to them following the receipt of my camper if nothing further is comped. Hopefully this saga is over with here in the near future.

I had a dealership pull the wrong motorcycle out of the crate when I purchased it and didn't know it until 3 months later when someone went to buy the other one. The dealer had to swap all of my mods over for free to the new bike and sell the original one as used, from what I understand they took a big loss on it. I was also told that had I been in an accident or needed to make a claim my insurance would have denied it because the bike I had was not the one they covered. If you financed it I would contact the bank and see about getting this whole thing undone. They did not deliver what they promised and the one they gave you has problems. You should get a new unit if you ask me.

No offense here but why should the OP get a new trailer?
His trailer is 4 years old, they gave him the exact trailer he picked out at purchase.
The selling dealer screwed up the paperwork and has agreed to fix the VIN issue.
The OP has repair issues that required him to take his trailer to the factory, knowing they could not work on it until January.
The factory misplaced his trailer due to the paperwork issue.
All the repairs are completed and he can now pick it up.
I get they put him on an emotional rollercoaster and that stinks but
aside from the paper work issue and maybe 4 weeks "lost" time, the dealer and the factory owe him nothing more than an apology.

Obviously they gave him the one he picked since he took delivery of it. I, assume, he performed a PDI of the unit and inspection when he picked it up. However, the paperwork is incorrect.

A multitude of screw ups but the factory owes nothing but an apology. For all the aggravation it would be very nice if they provided an upgrade like 2nd ac, slide toppers, or anything as a PR and goodwill item. Still partially their fault for all the time lost, calls made, worry, and more.

Clearly I missed the 4 years part. Whether or not he got the one he picked is still uncertain though. Who knows what really happened and if they pulled a fast one for some reason. I'm not saying they will or should be giving him a new one since it has been so long, but they royally screwed him over. This has cost time, money, and anxiety between the missing camper and now having to deal with the paperwork. Can't unscramble scrambled eggs but I'd still be a little pissed if it were me.
