FWIW, I recently completed a trip from Michigan down to Florida and back. I wanted to avoid Atlanta. To do so, I took US 27 which was a very relaxed and mostly uncongested drive. Road was better than most expressways in Michigan.

US 27 had a few towns to go thru, but none were an issue.

You could take 85 to 27 to 411 to route 53 then over to 400.

You would actually be better off if taking this route to 411 which then runs into 20 and straight into 400. Of course as BooBoo mentioned take 369 off 20 if you want to by pass Cumming to 400. Later RJD

When doing my research for the Florida trip, the consensus was that if you are going near Atlanta, you are best off just going straight thru town. Recommendations were to get in the high occupancy lane and just cruise. Common thought was that there is no good time to go thru except in the middle of the night. Otherwise it is either bad or worse. Lots of folks do it though.

US 27 is mostly flat with divided 2 lanes each way and speed limit of 55 and 65. You'd pick up 27 near La Grange and get on 411/20 near Rome.

When I need to go past Atlanta again, I will most likely take 27.

Get off if I-85 at Exit 13 (Hwy 219) LaGrange exit and take it north, it joins Hwy 27 in the middle of town. There is a sharp turn on the North side of LaGrange where Hwy 27 joins on to the 4 lane (where they ended construction of the 4 lane not finished through LaGrange) From LaGrange to Carrollton Hwy 27 is 4 lane divided, I've driven that way many times. Hwy27 bypasses Cedartown with 4 lane and goes back to 2 lane to Rome.

Actually, the better path to 27 through LaGrange is to exit I85 at Exit#18 onto 109. Turn right onto North Davis Rd (at the corner of the mall) which will put you on the bypass around downtown LaGrange! This will take you straight to Highway 27 (New Franklin Rd)!

Only 17 days till the Peach rally !!

Just made my reservations for the overnight stay outside of Macon at Lake Tobesofkee Recreation area so I can navigate around Atlanta with minimal traffic delay.

Lake Tobesofkee, try saying that fast three times... Especially after a few adult beverages...
