John...right...I did not read your further comments...but same end game anyway!
By all means, buy two of the same age and type. If you are using that Viking charger in your picture may I also suggest you get a real charger capable of properly treating and maintaining a pair of quality deep cycle batteries. This would mean a progressive or Iota or similar smart 3-4 stage charger and not the el cheapo pulse high frequency stuff fine for scooters and the like. If you're gonna get two batts...get something in the 50amp range. And don't leave it plugged in unless you need to use it! Good luck!

Conventional batteries contain a liquid “electrolyte” which is a mixture of sulfuric acid and water The water evaporates a bit with charging but the sulfuric acid stays in the battery. That's why we just add water when low.Getting the acid on your hands or clothes does not show up right away until the clothes are washed, then we see the holes.

Your battery is probably suffering from degradation of the casing where the fill holes are and the top cap is sealed at the terminals and side seams. Have seen this many times with batteries brought in for recycling. This is usually a sign of age but have seen some less than a year old due to manufacturing defects.
