Camping ? Maybe NOT!

With all the RV s hitting the roads this summer looks like camping spots will be scarce. People are buying campers like crazy and with the pandemic camping will be the preferred method of recreation and lodging. Reservations are impossible for many travelers and so boondocking spots will be at a premium.Campgrounds are raising prices and new ones are not plentiful . Looks like Wally World will be hosting more than usual if they dont end overnighting. Hang on tight its going to get rough for traveling.

Plus the US-Canada border is still closed.

Even if/when the borders open, there’s very little vacancies up here too.
We booked sites for the entire summer starting back during the winter, and ran into problems getting selections then.

Vacancy issues are on both sides of the border.

Sites

First you had the COVID RV buying panic.

Then the bots getting sites so people could resell them.

Our trip for two weeks is cancelled and our June 12th will be shortened, assuming our fearless leader lets more than golfers, tennis players, soccer players, etc. do anything.

Summer is so short in the north lands.

Stay say.

Even in Alaska many RV parks were booked full within days of accepting reservations. Especially during holiday weekends. But there are plenty of places to camp if you're open to boondocking.

even before covid, some of our favorite campgrounds have always been fast to book and required getting reservations early - so I have not seen a huge difference in ability to camp or in the number of campers - just seeing an increase in the number of newbees.

I drink LOTS of water daily. Perhaps 80-100 ounces, plus I take Potassium Citrate twice a day. Had two stones last December and now my urologist says if I keep the water and meds he expects I should never have another stone.
Sure hope he is right as stones are not fun.

Use your skills to avoid the crowds. Forget about visiting popular National Parks this year. Travel during the week, not on holidays. Take longer trips in the off season. Boondocking is always good.

Camping ? Maybe NOT!

We made all our summer trip reservations by February, so we are good to go. Sorta. Our last confirmed reservation is in McCall, ID September 15-19. Not sure after that but with kiddies back to school we’ll be okay. We are in Boone, NC the first weekend in October and that is booked. Then home.

Not going to any of the super popular, super crowded spots.

We leave Wednesday and spend a week at the KOA in Fancy Gap, VA. Then on we go.

Definitely going to be an interesting year of camping. We are waiting patiently for the Canada/US border to open up so we can travel up to Toronto to see our daughter. Been painful not being able to go visit her or for her to come down here and visit.

Things you can do

Make reservations as early as possible. If possible camp midweek and skip the weekends (retirement has its privileges). Consider boon dooking -- get that solar setup you've been talking about.

Sooner or later this will thin out as many of the newbies decide RVing is too much trouble, too expensive, they can't handle the drain hose or the Marriott lowers its prices.

Boondocking is the answer. We already paid or are paying for public lands. Why not get some return on this investment.

With Solar, quiet generator, a waste water tote and fresh water bladder a week or more off grid is a piece of cake.

In my experiences, it has been like that for the past 7 years. If you don't have your RV schedule hammered out when the reservation windows open you miss the boat, so to speak. Our State Parks never shut down when the pandemic started. We didn't have to compete with tourists last summer, but the parks were still full. Alaskans get out in the summer. Sport fishing, subsistence fishing, lots to do during the long days. As far as CG's raising prices, the price of everything has gone up!

This will likely be short lived. From what we've seen already in the early season. There will be some New units parked and put up for sale. Camping/ Rving definitely is not for a lot of todays younger couples.
