Champion Gen model question

I'm looking at Homeless Despots website. They have 2 2000 watt Champion Generators available. Model 100565 for $399 and model 100306 at $549. As far as I can tell, the difference between them is that the high price gets a fancy display of power output, fuel level, and remaining run time. Do you think the fancy display is really worth $150? Note that for $399, you may not get an oil funnel.

not worth it unless you plan to use them constantly. BTW, my 350 dollar model came with the oil filter and other stuff. Look around for the parallel connector, prices vary wildly, i paid 38 bucks for mine i think. Also, don't pay more than 10 bucks for the 'dust cover' if you want that too.

I like all the fancy gadgets, but I don't think that the $150 premium is worth it in this case either.

They appear to be the same except for the fancy schmancy stuff you mentioned.
$399 is as low of a price as I've seen.

Give some thought to what you might want to add to your generator down the road. Sometimes it makes more sense to get the "fancy schmancy" items all built in. Not a bad idea to have a fuel gauge, hour meter, and if I understand correctly a remaining run time indicator. Probably also indicates when to change oil.

If one is a cheapskate then none of those items justify the cost. If one is thinking more practical they may well end up being a bargain.

Your choice.

To make them a little fancier, I added hour meters for maintenance purposes. 10 bucks each on amazon, you just wrap the lead around the spark plug wire. It's tight inside the cabinet, but luckily my hands are not too big. I even got yellow ones to match the yellow cabinet. Looks factory!

I did the same thing with my Champion... except we got the black one to match... and it looks factory installed!

You can get an hour meter for $10 on amazon and it literally takes 10 mins to install.

Thanks everybody for confirming my thoughts on this. And yes, the hour meter is on the list as an add-on. $10-25 versus $150?

I look at myself as frugal. I have no problem paying for useful value. In this case, I don't see much.

I found best deal on champion at Cabela's. So did my brother and nephew a year after mine. They have unannounced sales and you just have to check their site every so often. Good luck. Either one you're looking at is a nice unit.

Hour meters installed

My babies. Bought them last year and still haven't fired them up. I should make sure they run before warranty runs out!

Kris, I like how the parallel kit fits between the 2 generators. My SIL just got the digital inverter hybrid. I canít wait until I can compare it to 4000/3500 Champion open frame for noise at different loads! Jay

Jay, the way they stack caught my attention when I picked them. Looks like some kind of scientific expedition!

Do you have to unstack them to put gas in the bottom one? Jay.

I think so, if I recall the fuel cap is on top. But they only weigh around 50 lbs and are easy to move so no big deal.

I bought mine at Cabelas also on Black Friday 2 yrs ago. With my son's military discount came to $350 plus a $50 gift card to use another time. I didn't even have the trailer yet. I wasn't passing that deal up.

Make sure you run them under load for a few hours , I believe directions state 5 hrs to break them in and then do an oil change. This is recommended by Champion. Easy peazy for the oil change. I just hooked up a hot air gun paint stripper and let it run on the driveway for the load on the generator.
I never tried running the trailer with it yet as we always had electric hook ups at the state parks we camped at.

Champion has come out with gens that look more like the Honda or Yamaha. They still stack and use a different parallel kit. I'm wondering if a 2200 watt model isn't about to be released.

Nice. The only thing I would have considered paying a little more for is dual fuel capability. Would be so nice to throw them on a 20 lb propane tank, not worry about rotating fresh fuel through. It looks like those new ones have parallel capability built in, unless the connector box is on the other side of the stacked generators.

At the time I bought my Champion Inverter I found that Camping World was the best deal in town. Deals seem to move around with no one outlet having the monopoly on "best".

Because I wanted a 3500 Watt unit and Cablela's and Camping World had exclusives I had little choice. With the smaller units there were lots of offerings at the time including e-bay.

Of course if one isn't fussy about it's pedigree there's also Craigs List.
