Getting ready to stay in the national parks Part 1

My wife will be retiring in June and I am getting the trailer prepped for a couple of 3-4 week trips each year that will include some stays in the National Parks. We plan on doing some of the traveling in the shoulder seasons to avoid some of the crowds and will be 4-5 days off the grid. I have a Champion 3400 watt inverter generated that I can use large draw items and to charge the batteries.

I have two questions the first that I will ask here about inverters and the second about batteries in a later post. We have a Roo 23ikss hybrid and only need minimal AC capacity but would like to watch a little television a little at night.

Should we consider a small inverter meant to plug into a 12 volt outlet next to the television or add a 1200 watt inverter hardwired near the battery and install an outlet next to the TV that is connected to the inverter.

I can go either way but I am not sure which will be make better use of my batteries. The plug in inverter would be cheap and easy but would be a longer DC run compared to the hard wired inverter. The hardwired inverter provides a little more capacity but most of the year we have electricity and I donít what to go too overboard with the install.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

The 1200 would be overkill for TV use. I am running a 400w which is hard wired to the 12v in the entertainment center and I run 32Ē tv, blu Rey & sound bar which all pulls 75watts or about 5 amps. Itís nice to watch movies at night/ rainy days without running generator.

Rethink your plans. Stay away from people for awhile. Lots of places to go outside of NPs.
