Apex 288bhs: Rock chip in front cap window

After being tent campers for about 30 years, we saved the cash to finally look for a travel trailer.

We picked up a 2019 Coachmen Apex 288bhs Summit Package late last year. We loved the layout, the lower ride stance, and the features. Had to have it. We had a socially distanced Thanksgiving then had to winterize it for winter. Cannot wait until warmer weather.

We did not notice this before we drove it home, but there is a rock chip on the front cap window. Is this something that a windshield repair professional can patch/fix like a rock chip in a car?

Thank you for any reply you care to send on this topic.

Don't know, but it couldn't hurt to ask a glass repair shop. It is glass not plastic, right? You could always pick up one of those 'do it yourself' chip repair.

Yes. It is glass. I will make a call or two and see what I find out. I welcome any further replies.

Have a good one.

Glass chip!

Yes take it in asap to a quality glass repair shop asap.
I had one 2 years ago in passengers line of sight and they did awesome job! It was one of the national chains. But if you don't it could get bigger and bigger with every bump in the road. They guarantee it for a certain amount of time. But just what the repair charge is not a new windshield. Good luck!

What's your insurance like? Covered by your tow-vehicle's "comprehensive"? Often your insurance will cover you 100% if you let them send their guy. And since it's covered by comprehensive, not collision, your rates won't be affected.

If you’ve got a ways to go and the roads are dirty, it doesn’t hurt to put a piece of tape over it to keep dirt out. If too much dirt gets in, it can be difficult to get a good repair done. Don’t turn the heat on inside either , that could help it spread.

Don't wash till fixed

A quick change in temperature like a garden hose causes a chip to spider. DON'T wash it!

Front Window Replacement

We had a crack develop on our Flagstaff 27BHWS front window in 2019. What we discovered was that it is not treated as a only a glass replacement as with a car, but more like a window in a house requiring that the entire unit be replaced (frame and all). It took a while for the replacement unit to arrive at the dealer, but it was replaced at no cost to us as the insurance covered the part and the labor. I think that the actual cost was upwards of $1,000. I imagine that your replacement will be the same.

Good luck.

If it's laminated glass, yes. If it's tempered glass, no. There is no way to inject "resin" into tempered glass.

Thanks for all the replies. I spoke with a windshield repair professional and he is confident that a repair is possible. He will come to my storage lot to make the repair.

I thought about calling insurance company, but we are not looking at more than about $125. Gonna pay it out of pocket.

I will let you know how it goes.

Met the chip repair guy today. He repaired the chip and I have trouble even seeing where it was.

This repair should keep any cracking from occurring. He said about 98% effective against any cracking.

I will call it a success. Thanks to all.
