Atwood 6 gal hot water heater

I have an Atwood hot water heater. The 6 gallon tank is made out of aluminum. I have heard mixed opinions if I really need to use a magnesium anode rod. It came with just a poly type plug and I was told that would be just fine since the tank is aluminum. I used an actual anode this past summer.
Just curious if anyone has had experience with this and is it fine to just use a poly type plug. Thank you.

Just a plastic plug is recommended.
I also have an atwood with a plastic plug.

Anodes are used in the Suburban line of water heaters which are porcelain lined steel tanks. Not needed in Atwood water heaters.
