Lost a Little Respect for my Fellow Campers

Last month I went to my storage lot to prep my Chaparral IBL360 for a trip to Colorado (Estes Park). As I pulled up to my trailer I noticed it had been hit on the front cap of the trailer. Most likely, it was another trailer. I notified the owner of the lot and he was no help. He did not have any video cameras on the lot or at the enterence. It was hit on the right side of the trailer and there isn't even a slot on that side which was even more confusing. They hit the trailer hard enough that it knocked the front end off its blocks. Who ever hit me did not leave a note.

I'm picking the trailer up tomorrow. Total damage $400. I don't get upset over these things. But it does tick me off they didn't leave a note. Not to mention the fact my storage lot had no camera's.

I'm willing to bet 99.999% of the people on this forum would have left a note. Oh well, no sense in getting your blood pressure up.

Too bad, glad it wasn't much worse! As for cameras, 9/10 times they don't seem to tell you what you need to know anyway.

It's too bad you have to go through all the aggravation, some people just don't get it or care. I'm surprised there isn't more damage considering it was hit hard enough to knock it off the blocks. Are there any marks on the pin box?

I totally agree, that was pretty crappy--he should have left a note (with his phone number so he could reimburse you). That would have been the upstanding thing to do. Just to make you feel better, though, I wonder if there's any possibility that he wasn't aware. I only say that because when I first got my TT, I knocked the sewer pipe off on a retaining wall and didn't even know it until I was parked in the driveway. Just leaving that possibility open so that you don't lose respect for all your neighbors--I think most people are pretty good (but certainly not all--somebody stole my iPod off my motorcycle).

Check the cap extra good. They're not a structural component, so to force the legs off the blocks make sure the cap didn't shift from its attachments. Otherwise it will leak like a sieve.

I'm kinda wondering if someone was trying to steal it based on where it was damaged in relation to the pin box.

What are the shards scattered on the pin box?

Doesn't look like they are from the front cap so maybe evidence of what/who hit it?

When I first bought my TT I had to store it in a lot because I was renting a townhouse. Reasons like this are exactly why I did extra research on the lot. Before I reserved a spot I went to the lot and had them show me around and viewed thier security features, I also made sure I knew exactly what they were responsible for as well as what my insurance was responsible for.

I have seen a few threads on here where TT/5ers were damaged on storage lots and people always say the lot is responsible (which makes me laugh). If they had read the contract and understood it, it is pretty easy to decipher who is responsible for what. Glad you got it fixed, just something you have to be mindful about.

I agree though crummy people doing crummy things, we all know what the right thing is but not all of us do it.....

X2 Do your research. We had our TT for 3 months, stored it at lot that had cameras and one weekend decided to take a trip (3rd one since we got it) noticed police cars at the lot. Well, the cameras picked up 4 individuals the night before but being that it was raining you couldn't see faces. 19 RV's were hit. Most were broken windows and ran sacked. One RV (bus) the door was hacked with a small hatchet to get in. With ours, they threw part of a cinder block at the dining room window several times before giving up and prying the rear door open. We were crushed our pride and joy. Nothing was stolen except our planned summer camping trips. In total, $7000.00 in damages to our trailer, our insurance took care of the repairs. Come to find out this storage lot has a history of break ins going back several years. Ask for references and talk to those people.

You might consider trying paintless dent repair.
Those guys can work wonders and they will come to where the camper is to do the job in a short day.

It could have been an accident. We were traveling on a 4 lane hwy in GA when we got to a construction zone. One traveler did not pay attention and his lane played out. His truck tires scrubbed the side of our TT, did some damage, but we did not feel it at all. We would not have known if it hadn't been for some witnesses who flagged us down. But if they did know, karma.

Some time ago I was sitting in the parking lot of one of the big box stores waiting for my better half.....Across the way and up a few cars a chap scraped the door of the car in the space next to him when leaving...He got out and examined the damage, looked around,went back to his car and left a piece of paper under the wiper of the damaged car.....A few minutes later a chap came out and noticed the paper and removed it....I got out of my car and walked up to him and told him I saw it all happen!!!! He showed me the paper...nothing written on it!!!!!!!! Good thing I wrote his lenience plate number down.....Called the police and they took it from there----Charging with hit and run.....A few days later he called me to again thank me for my info and help........J

Looking at the pictures whatever hit your 5er suffered a broken rear hatch window or rear door window. Probably someone with an SUV. One thing for sure, they knew they did it.
I'd definitely find a new lot with cameras at the very least at the entrance/exit. If there were cameras it would be pretty easy to see a blown out window on a vehicle.
The positive side is it appears to be only cosmetic and a gel coat repair is in order. Tape it up for now so moisture doesn't get in.

Our storage last winter had cameras, AND a keypad for entry. Every owner had a unique code for access.

That is good protection, it logs every individual that comes and goes so if damage does occur they know who to blame.

I'd definitely look closely at all vehicles in that storage lot with any damage at the same height as yours.

Crumby people ...can't drive or own up to their mistakes.

My TT was broken into and the storage place did have camera which were of no help.
