mod in bunk room

We have a 2014 Catalina 273 dbs. The rear bunks consist of a bottom full size bed and a top twin size. It's a bad setup since getting to the top bunk is very difficult. We use the top for storage only. I'm thinking of cutting the bottom bed down lengthwise so we can actually walk into the room. It would make it easier to get to the top bunk and we'd actually be able to reach the cabinet and not have to climb onto the bed to get to the clothes in the cabinet.

I'm looking for some advice from those who may have done any mods in the bunk room. And is it possible at all. The bed sits over the basement but doesn't appear I'd be affecting that.

Thanks for any ideas.
