Rear Bumper Rack Weight
Thank you for letting me join your forum. I have a 2019 Coachman Clipper 17 FQS travel trailer. I would like to mount a carrier on the back that will carry my trail bike that weighs about 200 lbs. I am very concerned with mounting it on the sewer hose storage tube. Short of have something new welded directly to the frame and coming out, anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks in Advance for you help.

Enter the subject in the search box.
Another concern is the weight distribution on the tongue.

Welcome to the forum from the north side of Lake Ontario.
When you say you have a 200# trail bike I presume you mean a small motorcycle? That’s very hefty for a bicycle. We don’t see many threads about carrying a motorcycle although people may have 200# worth of bicycles. The back bumper/sewer hose storage tube would be a bad idea for carrying that much weight. Even if you welded or bolted a proper receiver hitch to the frame back there you’d likely induce some sway as it would lighten the tongue on your short trailer. I would carry it in the back of a pickup or take second vehicle with a proper rack in its receiver hitch. Your Clipper isn’t suitable to pull a small trailer for the bike.

Our 2021 Wildwood platinum FSX 167 rbk, has a bumper mounted receiver that I put ur rack into, we haul spare chairs. tarps, sewer hoses, etc there, less than 200 bs. The dealer added some bumper supports to it when we bought it, they said it should support up to 500 lbs. I did move the spare to the front storage area to keep weight on tongue and rear even to offset the added rear weight.

I had this installed on my fifth wheel. It is rated at 350 Lbs.
Ultra-Fab 35-946403 Trailer Hitch Receiver at Amazon.com $221.41.
It will require welding to the frame.

My last TT had the fresh water tank almost to the end of the trailer. If I carried a full tank of water and carried two bikes on a welded hitch, I had lots of trailer sway. It all depends on how much weight is carried back of the axel and I had a WDH too. YMMV.

I have a 2020 fr patriot 16 fq. I installed a 2 x 2 x 1/4 inch angle iron under the rear bumper and bolted it to each frame rail at the rear.I made 3 attachments that slip into a vertical socket. I carry a 9 ft. boat and motor on one.2 bikes or 10 ft kayaks on the second. The 3rd is a carry box for wood or a generator etc. I have 2 seasons and several thousand miles on this setup. It works well.I am presently looking for a good second hand 10 -40 jon boat to try.A hitch receiver on the back of your trailer is a bad idea for carrying your bike. I also moved my spare to the right. In front of the tail light. I installed a plug in tail light in the center of the spare. It works well because the spare is chrome.Cheers Rob

My thoughts
Before you go a long way down this trail I would do the following:
1. If your water tank is in the rear, fill it.
2. Find someone who is 200-250# and have them stand on the rear bumper and look to see what happens on the tongue. Does it get lighter in weight to the point you don't have 10% of your trailer weight on it. If so, game over.
3. if OK, what I did was weld up a square steel tube that went from frame to frame on the rear and mounted a hitch receiver welded to that. This allow a trailer hitch type bike rack without any stress on the black tank hose carrier.
Keep in mind that when you take a bump, the weight on the bike rack will, at least, double the stress over a static load.

A large portion of folks are going to tell you if it didnt come with the receiver its not rated for the weight without serious re enforcement.
As stated there is days of reading on this subject. Third only to towing weights and my fresh tank fills because my water pump check valve is stuck open

I had a mobile welder come out and mount a double hitch to the frame and attach it to the bumper to reinforce it. We found broken factory welds and there is no doubt that if I had attached anything to the bumper it would have fallen off. I travel with a loaded cargo rack and a bike rack above it with two bikes on it. It cost me $400 including materials and it was money well spent.

I would suggest contacting the manufacturer to see if the trailer frame itself would support the weight of the bike hanging off the back. If so, I would have someone fab a carrier, the existing sewer hose storage (bumper) isn’t going to cut it.

If you're towing with a truck, you could put a receiver hitch on the front and a motorcycle rack into the receiver. You'll want to watch the payload capacity of your TV (tow vehicle).
I have a 200# Chinese mini bike with ATV tires, but I haven't figured out a good way to take it with my trailer. My truck tends to overheat already, so I don't want to mount it on the front.

Lol!!!
I don’t know….. It seems like some version of “China bomb got me!” or “Castle Rocks are junk, help me find a good tire” are pretty prevalent threads.

Most tt have a sticker stating not to mount racks to rear bumper as it will void your warranty. Later RJD

You should not attach anything to that rear bumper. Its relatively thin and any load bouncing up and down will rip it up. On that note I see other RV’rs loading there rear ladders up with lawn chairs and such that could damage it also. It’s made for supporting weight to go up and down the ladder not for the bouncing up and down as you travel.

Regarding the mfgr's labeling and this question.
My Chaparral has a folding cargo rack on it from the factory. It has a sticker on it that says 450# max.
Here is the tray (but not the mounting brackets) https://www.etrailer.com/RV-and-Camp.../LC243621.html
I recently went to Smittys RV & welding in Houston to see about getting a 2" receiver put on instead of the cargo tray. I figured it would be more conducive for bikes.
Anyway, they would do it but for 150# max. Essentially he said it would support 3 regular bikes max, no electric bikes.
When I pointed out the stout mounting/sticker of the folding cargo tray he would not budge from his orig limitation. I just figured that part of the chassis had been beefed up at the factory but apparently not for a 2" receiver application.

Our dealer added the struts that support thr bumper so we could as]dd a rack, I moved the spare to under the front dtorage to even out weight. the rack ai added holds about 200 lbs and the other, a dump tank adds another 50 lbs to the rear bumper. tahe dealer tech that installed the struts said to limit it to 500 lbs, I'm think half that is safe. here are pics, the rack isn't in its receiver at the time pic taken. Bumper sticker warns od voiding warranty, thus the reason I had the dealer install the struts at time of initial delivery.
