RV Dometic RV awning

We purchased our Coachman Freedom Liberty 29DBHSLE in October 2018. we have only been ably to enjoy it 4-5 times. We just recently noticed that there were two wear or thin spots in it so we contacted the RV dealer ship with documentation, They contacted Dometic manufacture provider of this Awning. They Dometic informed Dealer that they would not stand behind the craftsman ship of this item although it is still with in manufacture warranty coverage. When this is no longer covered under the manufactures warranty and needs to be replaced due to ware I am sure they will be more than glad to sell us another. Hopefully I will be able to find another Manufacture that will stand behind or under their product.

Joe.....

Have you made your case professionally to them directly?
I’ve heard of other dealings with Dometic that were positive.

Be polite, professional, and include pictures if you can, along with any other pertinent documentation that you haven’t had the rig that long.

Good luck.

Deal directly with the manufacturer. Sounds like more dealer nonsense to me.

Can you tell what is causing the wear? That is not normal in a couple of months.

Dometic Awning

No I can not determine the cause other than a manufacture defect.

Awning Dometic

I had some spots that I caused and on a previous auning that was caused by door rub. I sprayed Flex seal clear on it and on my new awning I sprayed where other one rubbed.

When it's worn out and needs to be replaced just go to your local boat/plane/custom car upholstery shop and have them make one up for you.

That looks like rub wear.
As you roll and unroll the awning try to see if those spots are hitting anything.
If not, then with it unrolled, try to see if the door, or anything else is hitting it.

There is nothing in this area to rub except the Awning itself. The door is at opposite end of awning. Dometic just agreed to have awning replaced.

That appears to be sunlight damage on an older awning fabric.
The vinyl is separating from the woven material beneath and will likely begin coming off in a large patch as the wind whips it going down the highway.

You need to contact Dometic with pictures for some help, else you need to buy some repair tape and stop the shredding before it gets any worse. A new fabric will cost you upwards of $250 + the labor to install it.

Good luck ........... Swampy

I agree. Joe, did you deal directly with Dometic? Or was this all word through the dealer?

Dometic Awning

Yes I E-mailed Dometic directly. When part comes in I am going to question why Dealer did not press the issue for a faithful customer.

Might also press the dealer to install it for you if they ever expect to see you in their dealership/service center again. That trailer is only a few months old and it sounds like they dropped the ball.

Dometic Awning

Dometic has state they are paying for fabric shipping and labor, so there should not be a problem with dealer installing. But I will have a conversation with them as to when they were contacted regarding this why they did not push the issue with Dometic for their customer.

Unfortunately we hear all the time where the dealer tells someone that the mfg. won't warranty something and come to find out they never even contacted the mfg..

Please let us know what the dealer tells you when you let them know that it's being replaced and ask them why they couldn't get it done.

Do you have a local RV service center? Someone that doesn't sell campers- just someone who services them? I have found their turn around time and scheduling is much better than trying to deal with the service side of dealers.

Good idea! Dealers are also paid back at different standard rates on warranty work than they can charge on retail service, so other RV's will likely get quicker service while warranty work is pushed to the back of the line as it's less profitable.

Another thing (the way I see it anyhow) is if the dealer lied to you, is there another dealership and/or service center nearby that you may want to take your future business to. You know this dealer will lie on simple stuff. So what confidence will you have on the more complex?
