OTOH, it protects buyer and seller. There are thousands of scams all the time where someone shows up with a cashiers check that looks legit, transaction is made, and 2 weeks later, turns out the check was fake, and the vehicle is gone. For $200, its good insurance.

Good point. They are also good for facilitating a purchase when you can't do the transaction in person.
